4 hours, and i still can't do it….please help!

I want to change the blog url to my main blog, but can’t get the other blog to release the url.
Every option I choose ends up with a brand new blog, rather than changing the url to the new name.
I don’t want another blog, all i want is to release the blog url to use in the main blog.
The blogs are under 2 different email accounts. I hope I’m making sense, and I hope someone can help. I see there is no way to actually contact wordpress staff, so we are at the mercy of the community. Thank you in advance.

There are limits to changing things – but rather than guess at an answer

But we really need the names you want to change, from to

I could not quite keep up with your post – another – new – change – old etc.

Sorry….I am overwhelmed, and can’t even articulate what I mean to say at this point.

I am wanting to change the blog url from one blog (i own), to another (i own). I am using the option to “change blog address”, however, the 3 choices one is given seem to just create a “new” blog with the new address, versus just changing the existing address. The names of the blogs don’t seem significant, as much as the options to “release” the blog url. Of course, i am such a novice, I don’t know.

You can’t change a blog URL to an existing blog URL, just the rules.

But all is not lost. You can Export the content from your old blog and import it into the second blog and go from there.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-between-wordpress-com-blogs

That still leaves the question about subscribers, and existing links to the first blog. I don’t know if the staff can move the subscribers between WordPress.COM blogs or not. You could domain forward the first blog to the second blog ( $13.– / year – one year should do it) – or you can set the old blog’s content to Private (Posts & Pages not the blog) and leave a note and link on the first page that you have moved.

Please don’t delete any old blogs. Once a blog name is deleted ALL your options go away and deleted blog names can not be reused.

PS – many support forums have a 12 to 24 hour response time – getting bent and opening a second support thread at 45 minutes is bad Karma – yes you have been working on this for a few hours – may I suggest also that you look at http://en.support.wordpress.com/ & http://learn.wordpress.com/ – the support documentation here is pretty good –

Please don’t make more than one post about the same issue. I just wasted several minutes answering your other thread only to find it closed when I tried to post it.

Sorry bout that @RC – guess someone is fast on the duplicate threads but looks to be a bit slow on blogger spam.

    @raincoaster, sorry about that!

@ddddonnaclark, you cannot change a WordPress.com blog to a name that is currently being used for another site, or a name of a deleted blog. In order to make the content of abc.wordpress.com available on xyz.wordpress.com, if xyz.wordpress.com already exists, is to export the content from abc and import it to xyz, assuming you own both blogs.

You could however change the blog abc.wordpress.com to zyx.wordpress.com if that hasn’t already been taken, or purchase a custom domain like xyz.com if that corresponding domain is available to register.

If you can let me know the name you wanted to use for your blog, and the existing blog name you wish to change, I can try to come up with some solutions that will work for you.

and auxclass, I caught the duplicate thread as I was cruising for spam to smash. :)

Thank you for your help everyone. I closed one of the threads to avoid having more than one open.
Regarding starting a second one, i thought i could rephrase it better the second time.
While I do appreciate the help, I don’t appreciate getting my hand slapped. This is my first time coming here for help, and if you wasted a few minutes, I apologize.
If none of you has ever been at their wits- end trying to figure out something technical, and felt overwhelmed, then raise your hand high. You are surely an enigma to me.
    Have a lovely day.

It’s a learning process. How are you supposed to learn if people don’t tell you how it works?

  • Unknown's avatar

ddddonnaclark, sorry you feel that way. The others who responded here before me are volunteers, who help out in the forums completely for free and on their own time. When users post more than one thread on the same issue, it takes up their time that could have been spent on another user’s question. I’m sure no one meant to offend you.

I’m still willing to help you out if you need it.

There is also a Sticky Post at the top of the forum page on getting started in the forum: http://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/ – did you read that before posting?

Your first help response was given in less than 5 minutes, a full answer in less than half an hour. I spent a bunch of time slowly typing a full and complete response, as did @RC (which was deleted) –

If you want instant 24 hours help, it is available on the web, expect to start paying at several hundred dollars a year for a WordPress site. Your site is free to you however. You can also hire a consultant for answers, @RC will answer questions on call (well I suspect not in the middle of the night) – I think her help starts at $ 200. / hour (a steal by the way) – there is a minimum charge of some sort or you can put her on retainer, here you got that advice for free.

Note also that there are two types of “WordPress” .ORG & .COM

For more on the difference: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Many people show up here having spent hours reading instructions for .ORG installs, then we get yelled at and told we don’t know what we are doing.

Others show up like you did wanting an instant fix, in some cases they want to be #1 on Google with a brand new blog in 3 days (can’t be done by anyone), others need their custom domain name up by 8 am in the morning (sorry takes up to 72 hours for changes to reach the far corners of the internet)

How much time did it take you to learn how to drive a car?

Other times a question will sit for a long time in the forum because the people helping in the forum don’t have the answer to the question, in that case we will let the question sit as that tells others that the person needs help that we can’t give a good answer to. So yo might see questions all around yours being answered, that might also be because those questions have been waiting far longer than your question has.

First in First to get the question answered is the way most forums work.

PS – bumping threads up after a few hours will result many times you not getting any help or someone posting that you are not getting help because of the bump – and they won’t give an answer even if it is a three word answer.
