404 categories

Quick response:
I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing a 404 error on your categories. It sounds like you may need to manually update the permalinks for your categories.
Since you are using the free version of WordPress.com, you may not have access to the Permalink Settings. However, you can try resetting your permalinks.
Here are the steps:
Go to your WordPress.com dashboard
Click on ‘Posts’
Click on one of your existing posts
Click ‘Update’
Try visiting your categories again
This should force WordPress.com to update the permalinks for your categories. If this does not fix the issue, you may want to consider switching to a paid plan which will give you access to more advanced features, including the ability to update your permalink structure. If you continue to experience issues, please click ‘Get Help’ or ‘Contact support’ below this response to get in touch with a WordPress.com Happiness Engineer who can help you with more specific and personalized guidance.
Thank you for your feedback! We will use it to improve our AI.

I have the free version of WP. I have this blog so I can get freelancing copywriter work. I changed the name of one category from ‘Academic’ to ‘Editorial Portfolio.’ Now I am getting a 404. One other category ‘Art and Photography’ also is getting 404. I am a writer not a coder. Everything I am reading is saying that I need to fix the permalink section. The free version does not offer that option. There is no permalink section under Settings. I do not know what to do. Please help.

I had to delete all the categories and links. I am applying for freelance writing jobs and if it looks like I have a broken website, nobody will hire me. I did take screenshots from the previously mentioned issue which I will post here. And just now I uploaded a test category and labeled it “Portfolio,” and then I mad a test blog post titled “Test” and put it in the Portfolio category. When you click on the link to the “Test” it works, but the actual category does not show up at all under categories.

It is insane to me how badly this website works. I just now went to edit my information I just posted, because I saw I had a spelling mistake and when I clicked on “edit” I got another 404!!!

Thanks for the extra details.
I’m showing a category link for Portfolio on your “Test” post:
Clicking on that “Portfolio” link takes me to that category page: https://rowynndumont.wordpress.com/category/portfolio/
Looking at your screenshot, it appears that you’re loading a URL using “Editorial%20Portfolio” as the link, which would indicate that you manually created the link without connecting the proper category. Can you link to the post or page where you’re getting the wrong link so we can take a closer look?
Thanks!

Editorial Portfolio as a category does not exist anymore. I deleted it, because it was giving me the 404. I created the Portfolio category just now, so that you could see an example of what I am talking about. As you stated at the bottom of the page it shows Portfolio and if you click on that it works. But if you look at my home screen Portfolio is not listed in the Categories. If someone is checking out my blog Portfolio is not an option for them to click on https://rowynndumont.wordpress.com

I do not see any category list on the home page of your site at the bottom. If I click on Test, a post you have in the Portfolio category, I see Portfolio listed as a category on that post. Screenshot: https://d.pr/i/Bkv2tO
Are you wanting to have a listing of all your categories in the footer of your home page?
If so, we do have a Categories List Block that can be placed on the home page where you want it. It would look something like this example: https://d.pr/i/8bmuyh. I just popped that in in the home page in the editor screen just to get the screenshot, and then deleted it.
You can also add a categories menu item and add your categories as a dropdown in the main navigation. You would do that from Appearance > Editor > Templates > Home and then edit the menu at the top and add the categories.
