re: the 404 error message on the front page
By default the front page of your blog displays all posts. The 404 (page not found) error message on the front page of the blog appeared because the Admin of the blog deleted the placeholder Hello World post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/not-found/
As soon as you publish a post, not a page it will disappear. Read the differences between Pages and Posts.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/On the bottom of your Admin page you will find a link to the Learn WordPress.com blogging Tutorial prepared by Staff. http://learn.wordpress.com/
The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page. -
Are you clear on the differences between Pages, and Posts? http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ Read about the Characteristics of pages and the Characteristics of posts http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/05/12/better-blogging-at-wordpress-com-pages-and-posts/
blog = post based site structure = designed for interactive communication
website = page based site structure = designed to operate as a one way noticeboardAny WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based, but let’s put that aside for the moment. Please read this entry > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
You can use any theme here at WordPress.com to create a page based structure ie. a website rather than a post based structure ie. a blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/
