404 Error Code after reordering posts

I changed the order of my posts and now folks get a 404 error code when they try to access my blog. How do I fix this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

How did you reorder them, by changing the dates?

Yes I did. I hope I can fix it!

Where are they accessing your blog from, via search engine? If so, it will take a while for your site to be recrawled and reindexed. You might be able to speed up the process by submitting your sitemap again.

When you change the date on a post, the URL changes as well (date is part of the URL), which means that any links to the posts with the older dates will lead to 404 errors. At this point all you can do is wait it out with the search engines (resubmit site map as Jennifer suggests). It could take 3-6 months for all the old links to disappear and until then they are likely to out rank the posts with the changed dates.

I am so non-computer savvy. Does that mean that no one will be able to access my blog for three to six months? If I want to submit my sitemap how do I do that? Alas, I am just a writer who is trying to post her pieces!

Also, another goofy question. Why is it that folks can see my blog when I send them a specific link but cannot see it when they search for it on google? I can access it in my favorites and other folks can access certain links. Weird.

Lastly, is there a way I can put my posts in order?I am posting pieces of a book one section at a time and I need the older sections to be first and the newer sections to come later. Folks need to read it in order so that it makes sense.

Take a look at this support page on writing a book. It is about the best way to organize things and set things up since it does not require you to change dates or anything.

    Write a Book

How long have you had your site here? It appears from your username only a couple months. It can take 4-6 weeks for the search engines to index your site, and 3 to 6 months before you will have enough search engine ranking to show up higher in searches. It just takes time. If you type the following into the google search box, you will see that they do have at least some of your stuff indexed already.

Also, you might want to take a look at this support page on increasing traffic on your site. The more traffic you have, and the more people search for your stuff, the higher you will climb in the search engine results.

How do I resubmit a site map?

  • Unknown's avatar

You will need to go back into google webmaster tools (bing and yahoo also) and do it from there.

Your site itself is accessible. However, as tsp said, because you changed the dates on your posts the address of the posts changed and, as a result, any existing, external links that led to those posts, like from search engines or other websites, were broken. As far as search engines go, they will recrawl/reindex your site. As far as other websites that were linking directly to your posts, you can try to notify the site owner.

Resubmitting a sitemap involves getting your hands dirty with a Google Webmaster Tools account. See the notes on http://en.support.wordpress.com/search-engines/ but again, your site will be recrawled and reindexed on its own without you doing a thing.

If your posts need to be in a certain order, tsp has mentioned how to write a book on WordPress.com. I don’t know if you would be interested in a Premium theme, but there’s http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/chapters/

    Good luck!
