404 error for idiots
-
I know nothing about programming, hosting and the like, I just use WordPress to publish posts (texts & pictures on http://www.vanplusfour.com). I have not ever had any problems before but for the last week or so whenever I try to write up a new post it comes back with the *page not found 404* error when I want to preview which makes me think it’s not going to publish it either. I have tried to copy my last post (which shows up just fine) and I have looked into permalinks (don’t have them in my menus), appearance (to change the theme??? some template???) and have absolutely NO IDEA what other people are talking about in the forums. I don’t know if I’m self hosted or who hosts my blog, what’s the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org or where to find plug-ins (do I have any???). I run wordpress on my windows powered basic laptop and am not familiar with programming language/files etc.
Can someone please look into this for me, I would really appreciate some help.

Did you save the post before previewing it? Do you also encounter this issue in a different browser? for example Firefox or Google Chrome?

We don’t allow plugins on WordPress.com for security reasons. Plugins are a feature only available for self-hosted blogs provided through WordPress.org.
However, we do have some really cool widgets. Perhaps one of those might meet your needs?

I have since found out that I can no longer preview my posts (regardless of whether or not I save them) but they seem to publish okay [as I sent a post yesterday for the world to see]. Strange? Also, my automatic picture settings (full size & centre) were no longer the default setting. I work with Chrome anyway so get lots of *no data received* messages (more than normal just lately). What’s the purpose of the widgets?

Widget is a fancy word for tools or content that you can add, arrange, and remove from the sidebar(s) of your blog. Widgets make it easy to customize the content of your sidebar(s).
