404 error Google Search Console
-
I have a number of pages with 404 errors. All these pages have the tags which are followed by nonexistent terms
https://audio-file.org/category/audio/inftrees
https://audio-file.org/category/audio is a really category
the term ‘inftrees’ is not a real subcategory nor anything I’ve added
where are these non-existent terms and URLs coming from? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there,
I see this similar topic open here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/pages-not-being-indexed/?view=all#post-4009642
To check, would this be the same/similar issue?
Many thanks in advance!

Hello there,
Many thanks for confirming that!
Adding anything to the end of a category URL, would result in a 404, for example: https://audio-file.org/category/audio/example
Did this https://audio-file.org/category/audio/inftrees show up as a link in Google Search Console?
Many thanks in advance.

yes, it did and this is not a term I’ve ever used or added
I have no idea where these types of URLs are from -
Hi there – a few more questions: Is that the only fake URL resulting in 404 for your site, or are there others? Do you usually keep an eye on Google Search Console, and has this happened before to your knowledge or is this a first?

there are other links
https://audio-file.org/tag/ripper/adler32
https://audio-file.org/tag/ripper/inffast
https://audio-file.org/tag/ripper/lib/deflate
https://audio-file.org/tag/ripper/lib/inflate
https://audio-file.org/tag/ripper/trees
I just added this property so this is new behavior -

Thank you for the update! After conducting some investigation, it seems I might have identified the issue.
There is a phenomenon where spam sites generate and link to “fake” URLs, similar to the ones you’ve observed. These URLs are typically produced by bot networks, and their actual purpose is not entirely clear. However, according to an article I came across, such links are unlikely to impact your site’s SEO. I found a response from Google’s John Mueller in a Reddit thread where someone experienced a similar problem:
. It seems that, since we can’t find any issues on your site, this might be what’s occurring in the Google Search Console.
I hope this clarifies things for you. Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.
