404 error with next page code <!–nextpage–>

    Hi:

I’ve created a static page on the front of my blog. Because the page is long, I inserted the next page code <!–nextpage–> to split it up. It looks great; however, when I click on the continuation page (2), I get a 404 error message.

    The blog is at http://sexistremarks.wordpress.com/

I searched the FAQs and forums but didn’t see this addressed; sorry if I missed it.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks to your question we learn something new! A page split won’t work if the page is your front page. I created a page, split it up like you did, and the “2” tab worked fine. Once I turned it into my front page, it ceased to work. I guess that’s because the URL of the page normally is blog URL slash page title slash, and a “2/” is added for the second page, but when you turn it into your front page the page title is removed. (If you properly add the page title and the 2 yourself in the address bar, then you can get to the second page.)

On another issue: the source code of your blog shows that you’ve probably being pasting from Word, which you shouldn’t be doing.

    Why not to use Word

Thanks a lot for your reply. So I assume that I don’t have other options for creating a continuation page from my front page?

As for Word, yes, I did create the document in Word 2007 but then used Word’s “Publish As” . . .”Blog” to convert the text to what I thought would be text with the correct code. I then cut and pasted it into the blog.

Well, since the page split won’t work, what you can do is put the rest of the text in a separate page and provide a link to it in your front page. You can have that page not show in your sidebar by getting its ID and writing it in Design > Widgets > Pages > Edit > Exclude.

Don’t use Word. Take a look at the FAQ that was posted above. It will ultimately cause you problems.

Thanks so much to both of you.
