404 errors

I did not change the url; I deletet the post and posted it again as a new post. The url is made from the text in the heading when you publish the post.

I have a similar problem on my blog. I’ve just created pages and wanted to add subpages which was working out fine at first. One link is working the other one comes up with an 404 error when I click on the link now. What can I do? I’ve edited this non-working subpage a few times, marked it as draft before I published it again. For three minutes the link was working now it’s all back to front again.

I know to little about the slug function. That is the high tech way, I guess but the more manual one is more advisable for an amateur like me. :-D)))

@ellissay, you’re not alone. Our local gaming group has the same problem with their blog. Any new pages we create appear as a tab but when the tab is clicked on, the 404 error appears. The page is listed in the manage>pages list, but the only way to actually view it is to make sure it’s saved as a draft, which makes it inaccessible to readers. Hardly optimal. I hope WordPress fixes this problem soon. It’s been going on for a week.

I figured out what caused the problem in my blog! If you add a slug to your post/page before you actually save and publish it it causes the 404 error. Apparently wordpress doesn’t like it if you change the slug before the programm itself had a chance to write its own one first. If you change your slug afterwards the error doesn’t occur. I’ve tested this three times and it now works for me. Everytime I changed the slug before I saved a page the error occured – especially if the slug you use is the same one the programme would generate as well. In my case my slug was “botanics” and WordPress used the same one as the topic was “botanics”. So both actually did collidate.
I’ve copied the code from the old page, started a new page and published that instead. So my problem is solved so far. Hope I could help though with my chaotic explanation. ;-) -
A slug? I had never heard this word before and started to look in FAQ: I found this: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/23/post-options-post-slug/
My problem was the norwegian letter “æ” in the heading = in the slug = in the url, and I got the 404-error.
Now I know what a slug is. It’s a good thing to learn something new :)
