404 file not found – HELP!!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

This seems very strange as I had it working and now it doesn’t. I had a link to a doc file that the user clicked to open the doc in their very own msword ap. It was working fine until I noticed an error in the doc. I removed the offending doc from the page fixed the error and re-uploaded the file to the media library and re-inserted it on the page. NOW when you click the link, which looks fine btw, you get the dreaded 404 File not Found error. I’ve re-uploaded several times, changed the name of the file, deleted the file from the library, prayed to the gods and done it all again and I’m still getting the 404…

Other than a martini or 2, anyone have any idea what I should do next???

    Thanks for your help, Jockp

Could we have a link to your wordpress.com blog please?

Are the titles of the new document and the old document the same? If they are, you should change them, as this is possibly the source of the problem.

No it’s not. I’ve changed it a couple of times thinking the length may have been an issue. The file name is 2009_gaba_ap1.doc the number 1 was appended to the file name even though I had deleted the previous copy from the library. If you roll your cursor over the links you will see that the file name and path are correct on the status bar…-

Hmm… I just read some threads and it seems that there has been an uploading issue on wordpress, many people have been experiencing it. Could this also have affected your file?

I hope that’s what it is. Thanks for your help Lizii. I let it rest for a while and try later..

    Best, J

@jockp: There must be several mix-ups with the names. For instance, in your page you’ve got two links to that document: the code for the one says 2009 but for the other 20009 (while neither one seems to exist). You can go to Editor > Add Media > Media Library, make sure your doc is there and get its real URL from there.

Another way to paste the link is open two windows in your browser, go to Manage > Media Library in the one, to visual page editor in the other, drag&drop name of file from Library to editor (IF it’s in the library).

The original file has to be renamed before being re-uploaded, or you will get this error. So open the original, click Save As, and pick a new name. Then upload that new version. When two files have the same name WP.com gets confused.

I ended up deleting the page and starting from scratch and it worked. So thanks to all for your help…jockp
