500 error after updating plugin

I’m kind of new to wordpress and have taken over the administration for a community website. After updating a plugin, I am unable to get to the original site or /wp-admin. I’ve read that it’s possible to deactivate the plugins as a troubleshooting method, but my admin credentials do not work when attempting to connect to the FTP site. Is there any other troubleshooting I can do?

It appears that your website uses the self-hosted version of WordPress rather than WordPress.com, which is what this forum is designed to help with. Note the difference here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
You may be able to find help here: https://wordpress.org/support/ or alternatively contact your hosting provider.
