Yesterday Stats shows an unbelievable 7294 views and 7465 in the U.S. alone.
Not believable.
Get real, WordPress.

Stats spikes like that can happen if search crawlers or bots visited your site, even though they’re filtered most of the time. You can check under Jetpack → Site Stats → Insights for more details. If the numbers still look off, contact WordPress.com support so they can review the traffic logs.

Well, in spite of my many comments this is the first response I have ever received. It is my understanding that I would need a paid account to avail myself of the pleasure of their company. I have survived for over 20 years without a paid account.
So, if there is anything for a blog writer with a free account I would appreciate directions. This problem [these problems] wax and wane.
Thanks so much.

Hi there! You got a solid answer from @mellonmikee.
You don’t need a paid plan to get support from WordPress.com. Free plan users have access to our support forums, self-service guides and our AI support assistant. In terms of support, the difference with paid plans is you get access to live chat and email support, but we’re here to help on the forums as well.
I’m sorry to hear you haven’t gotten answers in the forums before. That’s frustrating, and I want to make sure you’re getting the help you need.
Let me know if you have other questions.

Happy to help! From what I see on your site, the stats system is working as intended. Your November 2 traffic looks pretty normal traffic for your site. The referrers show the traffic came from search engines and various science sites. You can read more here to understand site traffic.
Looking at your traffic over the last 12 months, I can see July had a much bigger spike. That spike shows one of your posts got significant traction. Your most viewed post that month got a significant amount of views, and you had heavy search engine traffic, plus traffic from Google’s Android search. That’s what happens when content gets picked up by search aggregators or goes viral in a community.
The November 2nd spike you’re asking about is small compared to your July traffic. Since you have a science blog with lots of content that’s been around for 20 years, these traffic variations appear normal. Especially if your content gets shared across science communities and indexed by search engines regularly.

No, I am all set. I just find it hard to believe that a blog on basic and applied science could ever garner this many views.
Thanks again.
