$80.00 late renewal fee – what a rip off!

Tried to log into one of my blogs today and was informed that I had to pay an “$80.00 late renewal fee” to access my site.

Now, putting aside the ridiculous “penalty” amount of $80 in comparison to the yearly cost of hosting ($13), I had set this blog site up with auto renewal, and according to WordPress:

“Choosing the Auto Renew option on your domain upgrade is the safest route, so you never have to worry about losing control of your domain. See My Upgrades for more information. If you haven’t selected the Auto Renew option, we will notify you of the upcoming expiration several times via email and messages on your blog’s Dashboard.”

Now, I DID choose auto-renewal, and I received NO notifications that I needed to renew my site. Now I’m locked out of my site, and I can’t access any of my posts unless I pay WordPress this $80 extortion fee.

Well, I’m not paying it, and sadly, after being a long-time WordPress customer, I’ll be migrating all of my blogs over to another platform (and then posting to all of my readers a warning to do the same.)

Very sad that WordPress has stooped to this level of unethical strong-arm tactics to try to make a few extra bucks. I’ll do my best in the future to make sure that others are warned away.

    Hi there,

I just switched your site back to its free WordPress.com address so you (and visitors to your site) can access it there: http://perryatehere.wordpress.com/

No matter what happens with your domain, you’ll always be able to access your posts there. You can also access your dashboard from your My Blogs page to manage it.

I’m also sending you an email with more details about your domain. If you don’t receive that email from me, please reply here to let me know.
