A big Domain registration/Hosting confusion

    Hello,

I’m having some crazy issues regarding wp.COM, wp.ORG and Hostinger.
I don’t know much about domains, hosting, etc and I’m extremely confused.

    Here’s what happened:
    – Back in 2019 I started using wp.COM to register my domain and build my site. At the end of 2020, I started using Hostinger and wp.ORG only.
    – I forgot to cancel my wp.COM Personal plan and my domain registration (eduardobellon.com). So a few days ago I was automatically charged for them.
    – I canceled both the wp.COM Personal plan and my domain registration. I’ve already received my refunds.
    – Now, when I go to my website it shows a wp.COM screen saying ‘This domain is parked’. In my bookmarks bar, the links that used to redirect to wp.ORG Customize and wp-admin.ORG pages have changed, respectively, to wp.COM Customize and wp-admin.COM pages.

I’m very confused. Here’s what I think might have happened:

‘Domain registration’ is not the same as ‘Domain hosting’ (?). I was using wp.COM
to register my domain (eduardobellon.com) and Hostinger just to host it. I came to this conclusion because the ‘My domains’ screen in Hostinger is empty, but my website still appears in the ‘Hosting’ page.

Honestly, I don’t remember why I started using Hostinger, but I know it was related to my migration to wp.ORG.

So I thought: ‘well, let be buy again the domain registration in wp.COM and see what happens’. But when I go to Upgrades > Domains > Just search for a domain and type eduardobellon.com it shows this message: ‘This domain is already mapped to a WordPress.com site.’

Maybe that’s because I’m still hosting it with Hostinger? So I should delete it from Hostinger and do it all again? And what about my website? Do I lost everything? Have I already lost everything?

My work depends on that, so thank you very much in advance!

You cancelled the domain, meaning you no longer own it. Where you’re hosting your site has little to do with the problem you’re having now – the cancellation is. Also, cancelling a domain doesn’t immediately release it for repurchase.

Since we were the original registrar of the domain, we can recover it for you if you pay the $18 USD domain registration fee.

Let us know if you want to proceed and we can send an invoice and restore the domain. You’ll be able to point it to Hostinger as soon as it’s restored, then transfer the registration after 60 days.

Let us know if you have any questions. Otherwise we’ll wait to hear back from you.

YES! Please, send me the invoice as soon as possible.

    Thank you very much.

  • Yesterday, the domain fell into redemption: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-expiration/#redemption-period

We can still recover it, but it will be an additional $80 fee, which we cannot waive.

I have sent a payment request for the total of $98 to the email address on your account. Once the payment is sent, please reply here to let us know, and we will recover eduardobellon.com.

Honestly, csonnek should have warned me about that.

It took me a while to reply because I was looking at other domain companies. But if I knew the price would go up to $80 in just a few days, I would have asked for the invoice right away.

No, I won’t pay that amount, this is crazy and offensive. I cancelled the domain by mistake! Can’t you make an exception?

What about my website? If I buy a new domain with another company and point it to Hostinger, and considering I was using wp.ORG to build it, do you know if I can still recover my website as it was before?

  • That is not a fee we can waive, it is imposed on us by our registrar partner, I’m sorry.

You should be able to point any domain to your existing website, but I recommend checking with your hosting provider first.

Sorry, but it isn’t imposed on WordPress. It’s imposed on me only.

Well, will I be able to get my original domain back in a year or so, when I’m able to pay that fee? Or WP will impose on me another “super late fee” of 500$?

The funny fact is that I’m not being sarcastic. That’s very possible to happen!

    Hi there!

If you pay the redemption fee along with the domain renewal fee, we’ll restore the domain for you. The process can take up to a week.

If you don’t want to pay the redemption fee, you’re welcome to wait for the domain redemption period to end. We have more information on what happens if a domain is not renewed while it’s in redemption here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-expiration/#domain-released

Please take note of the fact that there may be other companies or individuals who have placed backorders on canceled/expired domains. So there’s a risk involved in not renewing the domain while it’s in redemption that you may lose the domain ownership permanently to someone else. This means that even if your domain is released, another party can purchase it before you get the chance.

In any case, it’s entirely up to you how you’d like to proceed. Let us know if you have more questions and we’ll be happy to help as best as we can.

    Regards
