A BLOG WITH TWO DISTINCT AREAS

I have a blog right now (http://eastmeetswestbookclub.wordpress.com) for a non-profit group I run — a book club. I recently bought a domain and am using that too – http://intrepidpens.org. It’s working well. I post things as they happen, and book club members reply with comments. It’s very basic/simple – and it has to be – group members are not very computer literate.

I want to create a second ‘section’. I’ve tried to do that by adding a page (Intrepid Pens) – because we have a writing group too (and, unfortunately, have two blogs or websites (one for the book club and one for the writing group) was just way too confusing for members). HOWEVER, I’ve discovered, I can’t add multiple posts to a PAGE (which I wanted to do to showcase group member’s writing — a new post for each piece of writing).

HOW CAN I KEEP THE TWO SECTIONS SEPARATE > WRITING GROUP AND BOOK CLUB < BUT STILL ON THE SAME BLOG?

Is there a way? Keeping in mind this all has to be very easy for users to navigate; has to be easy to figure out. Thank you so much!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Consider Page as a web-page. You can curate it however you want (just as you would any web-page), but you cannot post blog-posts on it, like you do at the blog’s main page.

To create “sections”, you need to file the posts under appropriate categories, and add the Category widget to your sidebar.

If you wish to have those categories as page tabs in the header, it can be done but not with the theme you’re using.

Thank you SO much PANAGHIOTISADAM! I will use the Categories Widget. Note: Can you tell me which theme will allow me to add a page tabs section in the header? Thanks again!

    You’re welcome.

To create those artificial tabs, you need to click on each category in the Category widget, copy its URL from the address bar of your browser, and use it as exlpained here:

    Page tabs as extra links

@Panos-If and when they implement the “Edit Menu” option here on WordPress.com (upcoming feature in standalone v3), that wonderful hack may become antiquated.

@Jennifer: pray they do and pray it does!

Oooh! Yes! EDIT MENU would solve all my problems, as would being able to POST multiple times on a PAGE – that would make WordPress.com MUCH more like a website, and would allow us to make them more dynamic, more user-friendly. Hmm….

We are already on 3.0 here. Staff switched it a couple weekends ago. Perhaps they are just waiting (there are some issues with it) or perhaps they need to modify all the themes here before they can implement it. I think it requires some pillaging and burning in the theme files.

Add a link to the other blog in your links section instead of the pages section.

@agrondahl-If you’ve tagged the Posts correctly with the category, when someone clicks on the Category in the navbar, the page is dynamically generated every time. Perhaps you might also consider using one of the newer themes that already include the categories in the navbar, such as Enterprise or Titan.

@tsp-I’m trying to be hopeful following Matt Thomas’ statement in his introduction to 2010:

    Drop-down Menus

Twenty Ten neatly organizes your pages into a menu right in your blog’s header, and includes drop-down menus for multiple levels of nested sub-pages. There’s more coming with the menu, but give us a few days.

Or maybe I’m reading more into that than there actually is. Or maybe you’re right and trying to switch 11 million blogs over to the new version requires just a bit of pillaging and burning first. :)

You are all so wonderful! Thank you for the help. (I am not a frequent forum user, but I sure do love it!)

Question: Can some posts be under TWO CATEGORIES at that same time? So that if there’s something I’d like everyone to see, it’ll be there? And, if so, how can I do it?
