A broken home link page
-
I am new to word press. I am trying to set up a site with six top level pages. I have managed to break the home link – the pne viewed as you first enter the site. it gives a not found message – but when I search for home I get the home page and text I want on the page you SHOULD see when first entering the site. How do I fix it?
I am using Pilcrow by Automattic.
I have tried deleting the pages from a new menu, saving, and implementing this new menu – no joy.
I have tried re-installing Pilcrow – no joyHELP would be very much appreciated
Also I want to activate the parent child hierarchy on two of the top level pages but can see how to do this. I want a list of page links list on the top level page, then for a reader to navigate to the different pages listed.
HELP would be very much appreciated
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

it gives a not found message
That’s because you deleted the Hello World placeholder post and as soon as you publish a post (not a page) it will disappear. http://en.support.wordpress.com/not-found/
Pages are static. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will show on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page.
What’s critical is:
(1) a clear comprehension of the differences between pages and posts > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/(2) a clear comprehension of the fact that there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. But we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page. We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can either put the categories widget into the sidebar, or you can create a custom menu and add the categories into the custom menu.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages-to-your-menuIf you do not want all the posts to show on the main page then you can create a static front page for your site as you have done.
Choice 1 static front page.
Choice 2 running page for all posts on front page.

I am sorry – and I will do my homework – but non of that tells me if this is a recoverable error I’ve created. Yes I created a static front page, and I created a Posts page as instructed , which is now deleted because it suddenly contained what should be on Home after I linked another page to it in an attempt to remove the comment function from my pages, and just leave one comments page called Post. Does this make sense?
But I can’t see how to recover – or even if it’s possible to do so. I will go and read your links but I am so miffed about what I’ve done. Please tell me this is fixable

You cannot delete a home page – period. If you do want all the posts to show on the main page then go here . Reading > Settings and choose this setting I place in mold lettering.

Thank you I’ve got a ‘welcome’ message on the site again now. I am starting to understand what I did. Sorry to be thick: defence is I’m new at this!
Now last time when I set up a posts page it removed the comment box from the front page BUT left that ability on all top level pages. Is there anyway to prevent this? I just want ONE top level page called Posts for readers to leave a comment on. Can I do this?

The default setting for all WordPress blogs pages and posts for commenting is open comments. The software does not spontaneously change the default settings; only we bloggers can override them. This page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
We can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any post or page.
Depending on the theme we use when we close comments a phrase like “comments closed” or a similar phrase may appear and if so, it can only be removed by CSS editing after purchasing a custom design upgrade. -
Hmm I’ve posted a comment and when WP asks do I want to view it I can see what I’ve posted. BUT when I refresh the site via the toggle at the top of the screen (the one I access the dashboard from) I STILL get the 404 error.
I don’t understand what is going on.
-
I also have a comments closed phrase at the bottom of the page where I can see the new post – the one that isn’t showing on refreshing the site via the toggle. Where will this post be? I can read it still on the screen I input-ed the new post on.
I am confused and very dispirited

The conventional blog structure is that Home is the front page of the blog and no matter which page visitors are on they click Home and arrive on the front page of the blog. In the conventioal blog structure there is where they read the most recent post in the blog, as all blogs by default are designed to display posts in reverse chronological order on the front page of the blog ie. Home. Some bloggers choose to create a welcome post (not a page) and make it a sticky post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-posts
Other bloggers choose to create a static welcome page (not post) as the front page of their blog and another page for posts to appear on.
What is your intention?
Do you intend to force the returning readers to your blog to have to click through the same welcome post, which you have placed on the page you titled Home ,each and every time they come to read your latest post? If you do not want all the posts to show on the main page then you can create a static front page for your site as you originally did.
