A Clever Type of Spam – a Lesson for “Newbies”

Clever, but not unusual. I just received a comment on my blog (that skipped thru Akismet) that included a web address that related to auto racing. The first “red flag” went up by the very cryptic comment left. (“I agree totally”)

Because this blog’s topic is racing related I clicked through to see who and where the comment was located.

Rather than go to the address on the comment it redirected to a site dedicated to the Warcraft game, although the url remained the racing related one.

A quick Whois search turned up it was registered by someone at University of Washington and the IP resolved to Comcast Cable in New Jersy.

Needless to say I fired off an email with all the pertinate info to the abuse line for Comcast and U of Wash.

Lesson for all the new people around WP.com:

If you should have the same problem use the DNS stuff service and track down these slimballs, get the abuse email addy and report them.
