A couple of quick questions about the Cubic theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I am considering switching my site from the Chunk theme to Cubic and have a few queries that would set my mind at rest before I commit.

Looking at how my site would look using Preview:

    1) Posts are displayed from the front page as boxes with a picture from the post content seemingly randomly chosen as its main image. Many of my posts have multiple images and I was wondering if there’s any way you can manually pick the one that will be the representative picture?

    2) While you can create a custom menu, does all of that content only ever get grouped in one single main menu located at the top right of the front page? I ask because between Pages, Widgets, Tags, Categories, Social Media stuff etc. this makes the scroll on that page a bit longer than I would like. So I was wondering if you can add a second menu option at all?

    Thanks in advance,

    C.

    Hi there!

    1) Cubic will use the Featured Image as long as the post has one and it’s large enough. (The recommended/best size is 2000 wide by 1500 high.) If there isn’t a Featured Image on a post, the theme will grab the first image in the post, or there is a setting that will set it to display a colored block (rather than an image) anytime a post doesn’t have a Featured Image set.

There are details on that on this page: https://wordpress.com/themes/cubic/

    2) The theme has the primary menu (at the top right) and a social menu (at the bottom right). You can check them both out on the demo.

On the demo’s primary menu, there are some sub-menu items that may help you organize your menu too. Expand the menu then click Blog on the menu, and you’ll see a list of other options (related to “Blog”) listed there. Perhaps some sort of plan to sort items like that would help?

Let me know if you have any questions! :)

    Thanks for the reply Sarah.

I’ve gone ahead and switched now and after some tinkering most of my site looks fine. However I have another couple of minor questions I’m afraid!

    1) You’ll see within my Primary Menu there’s headers for DECADES and NATIONS and in the sub-menus for each are all the various options that my posts are categorised as. However those top menu options are live and clickable (just like the sub-menus) and when you do they take you to a Nothing Found page.

The thing is that none of my posts are actually categorised as DECADES or NATIONS which are just headers to my mind – they will be categorised as 1960s and Italy or something similar. Is there any way I can make them static or unclickable as such, just the sub-options within?

    2) I fiddled around with trying to put a logo on my header and just found it really awkward and almost apologetically small in size. Is there any way to create some sort of logo that stretches across the width of the actual header itself? And if so what would the dimensions be?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Craig,

I’m glad to see you set up with Cubic. :)

    1) You’ll see within my Primary Menu there’s headers for DECADES and NATIONS and in the sub-menus for each are all the various options that my posts are categorised as. However those top menu options are live and clickable (just like the sub-menus) and when you do they take you to a Nothing Found page.

You can edit the parent menu items so that they’re un-clickable. To do this, first head to the My Site > Menus in WordPress.com:

    https://wordpress.com/menus

From the above page, select the pencil icon next to Decades. A new window will emerge. Select “Links” from the sidebar of this new window and add a # symbol in the “Link Address (URL)” field. Save your changes and repeat the process for Nations.

    2) I fiddled around with trying to put a logo on my header and just found it really awkward and almost apologetically small in size. Is there any way to create some sort of logo that stretches across the width of the actual header itself? And if so what would the dimensions be?

There isn’t a way to create a logo that stretches the width of your posts page. You can, however, add featured images to individual posts or pages. The featured images will display in the header and fill up the width of your screen. Cubic recommends featured images that 2000px in width and 1500px in height.

Let me know if that’s helpful or if you have any extra questions.

    Hi there,

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve changed the appropriate menu headers so that clicking on them doesn’t take you anywhere. I must admit I would never have worked out that solution to be honest – I don’t think I’ve ever even accessed menus from that page. I have always tended to fiddle with menus from Dashboard / Appearance / Menus which doesn’t give you those options anyway.

Thanks for your help and I’ll be sure to get back with anything else that arises.

    Thanks,

    Craig

    Hi Craig,

The solution is a bit of a workaround and not entirely obvious. I’m glad you were able to get it working! :) You’re right that the option to edit your existing menu items in such a way is only possible from our newer interface too.
