A different quick question about tags please

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi.

When adding tags to a post, is there a way to select tags from a list of those that are already in use/entered to my library?

It would be far better organizationally and help prevent needless excess.

    Kindly advise either way.

Thank you very much. Have a great day.

  • Hey there,

It’s possible to see a list of tags here: https://eyeofthewolfe.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=post_tag

When in a post, as you’re typing a tag, you should be presented with some options.

To check are you seeing these suggestions?

    Many thanks.

I’ve started adding some tags that will be used later via the Home, Posts, Tags page.

Then when I go to one of my posts and try to add tags, I start to type and they don’t show up.

The other part of that question is if there is a way for all the tags to show up on the post page so instead of typing them in and risking extra tags that might be unnecessary (ie: pounds and lbs) so I could just click on the ones I want to apply to that post?

Thank you very much. Have a great day.

  • Hm, I’m not able to replicate that on your site – if I start typing a tag then it does show up after a short moment! Are you finding that the tag doesn’t show up at all for you when you start typing, even if you wait for a moment or two?

As far as I’m aware, there isn’t a way to list the tags for selection in the same way as categories, but typically the post editor will start to show you which are your most-used tags:

Depending on what you need from the tags, it could be worth using categories as a broader organizational tool – they work similarly of course, but categories display slightly differently in the editor:

Thank you very much for that info. Is there any way to suggest that as a possible feature for the (hopefully near), something that could be turned on and off in settings? Seems a good way to prevent clutter and duplication.

Thank you again. Have a great day.

  • Hey there,

We can certainly make a suggestion. :)

Would you be willing to provide more detail and context as to what you think would work based on how you’re using the editor/WordPress?

    Many thanks.

    Hi.

    Sure.

If I’m writing a post, it would be preferred to have the option of being able to add tags from a list, maybe a drop down list or such, as opposed to typing and waiting to see what comes up.

Not everyone would want to use this option, and even people who like the idea may not want to use it all the time.

So I’m suggesting to make that option available, but also have the ability to turn the option on or off (perhaps a simple checkbox in “Home, Posts, Tags”).

There are times when you would like to use tags that have already been added, but can’t recall what they were and starting to type would not bring up the specific one you are looking for (ie: one day you tag “pounds”, another day you may look for it using “lbs”). Another example is you may use one tag, but there is another one already on your list that would be much better suited to the post.

For some of us, that would make organizing and tagging much more efficient and reduce duplicates and unnecessary tags. It could help keep things more consolidated.

I know I would really LOVE this option because my preference would be to add all my tags into the list, then click on them as I need them. My goal is to try and keep it tidy. Otherwise I will either have to keep going back and forth with my list, which can get tiresome.

This option isn’t for everyone, so the ability to turn the function on and off would be good.

    It’s just a thought.

Overall, I think the site is good, and the forum is extremely helpful. I have only one other suggestion if it could be submitted somewhere?

    Thank you for listening.

And thank you very much to all the folks who have been helping me along, I really do appreciate it.

    Have a great day.

  • Thanks for that! Just for a little more context, many people end up using a lot of tags over time. I checked the three sites I use most. One had over 650 tags, another had over 2000. I checked a site where I was sure I hadn’t used many tags, and there were still over 500.

I do happen to know the categories display in a list like that, though, as most sites don’t have as many categories. Tags and categories work similarly in the reader; would you consider using categories instead for this case?

I would need a better understanding of the difference, not only how it affects this site here, but how it affects web searches/indexing as well. For example, how would tags vs categories change your ranking in google search results, and other searches and sites, or does it help your rankings to use both, and so forth.

Any help in understanding that would be very much appreciated as well.

Thank you very kindly. Have a great day.

  • There’s not much difference between categories and tags in terms of SEO. There are differences in how you can organize your site with them, though. For example, categories can be heirarchal. And as we mentioned, you can get a list of categories to choose from when you write a post.

Tags and Categories show up as “topics” in our reader, and we have tips on using them effectively for that. Using the example from that article, if I had a book review site and was writing a review of a biography of Napoleon, I might have Book Reviews as a main category, Biographies as a subcategory, and a few tags like World History, Emporers, Napoleon, France, and (if it was his book) Andrew Roberts.

We’ve got quite a bit of info on building traffic and improving SEO on WordPress.com, including this section on SEO. I’d recommend exploring that and also following wordpress.com/go for other ideas.

  • Oh! And in case we forgot to include this one, be sure to read this guide as well:

Categories and tags are very similar. They both allow you to organize content that can then be used in a variety of ways. However there are a few differences. Categories are best used for broad groupings of topics. For example, if you’re creating a site that reviews media, you might use categories such as Books or Film or TV. Tags are much more specific topics that you want to use to associ

Just wanted to say, with over 800 tags myself, any option would need to be opt-in. I don’t need yet another “new” thing to screw up my already circuitous work flow.

@bookstooge , that’s why I included an option of turning the feature on or off in the settings :)

@supernovia , thank you for those links. I’m going to read up on those tonight and in the morning.

Will be back to either ask any further follow up questions, or close this after more research/reading.

Thank you ALL very much. I really appreciate the assistance. Have a great day/eve.

  • @eyeofthewolfe if we get traction, we can file an enhancement request. I am guessing though that because of the extra toggles and extra maintenance two different interfaces, it’s unlikely to happen without a plugin designed just for that. Especially since most established sites have hundreds of tags.

But if you’re looking to select from a reasonable list, I think the categories will suit you nicely!
