A few questions regarding moving WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I have a few questions, any help would be much appreciated.

I would like to move my blog that I have WordPress.com to a new website and over there install WordPress.org and a new theme.
I was wondering how difficult would be this process?

Would it be possible to move the entire content from my WordPress.com blog (all topics) to this new WordPress theme where would be a blog section with the transfered topics from WordPress.com ?

Another question is about domain. Currently I have registered domain for my blog with WordPress.com. On the new site I would have new domain, but I would like to redirect my old domain to the new one. Would it be better to transfer my old domain too?

    Many thanks,
    Dario

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I was wondering how difficult would be this process?

That’s actually an entirely different version of WordPress. The information to help you get started on that would be found here:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Getting_Started_with_WordPress

The short answer is that using the open source WordPress.org software, which you’ve described, is much more hands on and technical than what we offer here at WordPress.com.

WordPress.com is a managed hosting environment.

Would it be possible to move the entire content from my WordPress.com blog (all topics) to this new WordPress theme where would be a blog section with the transfered topics from WordPress.com ?

Yes, you can create a site export of all of the content (pages, posts, comments) and then import that on to the WordPress.org site. The theme needs to be installed and set up again, though.

Regarding the domain: why are you creating an additional domain? There’s no need. You can point the domain that’s registered here to the new hosting provider of the WordPress.org site. Just click on My Sites – Manage – Domains – Edit DNS.

    Thanks for the reply!

You said: “Yes, you can create a site export of all of the content (pages, posts, comments) and then import that on to the WordPress.org site. The theme needs to be installed and set up again, though. ”

I was wonderign how difficult would this process be? I am already using WordPress.org so know how to handle it, but I have never made any similar transfers.

Do you mean that first I should install WordPress.org on a hosting service with the theme i plan to buy, and then re-install the theme once the transfer is completed?

The reason I was thinking to move the domain too is because of the difference in price. I think WordPress.com charges 25 USD per year and many other services around 10 USD.

    Thanks,
    Dario

To export your WordPress.com site’s content, go to My Site ->Tools ->Export and follow the steps there:

    Export Your Website’s Content

That will give you a file which you’ll have to import on your new site using the WordPress importer at WP-Admin ->Tools ->Import. When you install your theme doesn’t matter, but you must have WordPress already installed on your hosting account in order to import anything there.

You can find a more detailed guide here:

    https://move.wordpress.com/

Regarding the domain, it would be simpler for you if you transferred it to the new provider completely. That way you can manage both domains in the same place. Only do that once you’ve finished migrating your site’s content, though.

    Thanks for explaining this.

Do you know if the migration affects how easy/diffucult it is for others to find my content via search engines?
If so, is there a way to remedy this process?

  • Assuming you keep the same domain after you move, it won’t be any more easy or difficult, it should be relatively the same.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I would not keep the same domain. I would have new domain and would direct the old one to the new one. What would happen in that case with the search results?

    Thanks!

  • Google will eventually notice the redirect, and begin to make changes in its database.

There isn’t really a way to force that process to happen any quicker, so it will all happen in Google’s time.

I see. And may I ask how will the move affect my subscribers? Will they have to subscribe to my page anew?

And also, I guess the old links linking back to my page will not be valid anymore, because of the change of domain, regardless if I direct my old domain name to new one. Correct?

This will probably also affect my page ranking too. Correct?

    Thanks,

  • If you use Jetpack you can migrate your subscribers, no problem there.

And also, I guess the old links linking back to my page will not be valid anymore, because of the change of domain, regardless if I direct my old domain name to new one. Correct?

Old links will work as long as your redirect is in place. Site admins that are aware of the 301 redirect can update their links. Noting too, if you were to upgrade the site here to a custom domain, we would also redirect automatically for you.

Page ranking is a touchy subject with lots of factors, so we can’t promise anything on what would happen to that.

    Hello,

If you use Jetpack you can migrate your subscribers, no problem there.

Could you please tell me how is this possible to do?

Old links will work as long as your redirect is in place.

I’m not sure how this would work. Does that mean if I redirect a domain eg. http://www.vehicle.com to http://www.radio.com, that all articles posted on vehicle.com and that have been distributed on various places across the internet will lead to new domain?

Noting too, if you were to upgrade the site here to a custom domain, we would also redirect automatically for you.

I am not exactly sure what you mean here. Could you please elaborate?

    Many thanks,

  • Install the Jetpack plugin on the site. https://jetpack.com/

Correct. Everything will redirect to the new domain so long as that redirect stays in place.

I am not exactly sure what you mean here. Could you please elaborate?

This only applies if you’d like to use WordPress.com. Registering a custom domain through us would include the redirect needed for question two.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for answering my questions.

I was wondering though how can I direct the old domain of my old blog (which is registered with WordPress.com) to the new website domain. Where in WordPress.com can I find this option?

Also, if I would to do that, would my old blog dissapear from WordPress.com?

    Thanks,

  • I was wondering though how can I direct the old domain of my old blog (which is registered with WordPress.com) to the new website domain. Where in WordPress.com can I find this option?

You will want to change the nameservers on the domain or add custom A records. You can find detailed instructions for that here:

    Domains

If you do that, your custom domain will stop showing your old WordPress.com blog, but the blog itself will no disappear, it will still be accessible with the free subdomain highestquest.wordpress.com.

    I hope that helps :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks.

It says in the link you provided the following:

“If you would like to use a domain name you originally purchased and registered through WordPress.com for a site that is not on WordPress.com, you have a few options:

    1. Keep the domain registered with WordPress.com and change the name servers to point somewhere else.”

If I would to choose this option, would then my old blog be invisible?

I see when I go to this link https://wordpress.com/domains/add/site-redirect/highestquest.org that redirect is 13 USD per year. Is that the option I can choose for redirecting?

I wouldn’t like for my old blog to remain.

    Many thanks,

  • If I would to choose this option, would then my old blog be invisible?

In a way, yes. Anything under the domain will be your new blog, but the old blog will continue exist under highestquest.wordpress.com and that’s what the Site Redirect upgrade is for (to direct highestquest.wordpress.com to highestquest.org which is then hosted elsewhere).

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh I see. So let me see if I got this right (please correct me if I’m wrong):

If I move my domain highestquest.org to a new registrat, then my old blog will exist as highestquest.wordpress.com.

If I want it to be invisible, i can through the site redirect upgrade redirect it to highestquest.org, which in turn (from the new domain registrat) will redirect it to my new website domain.

    Is this correct?

However, if I choose for highestquest.wordpress.com to still exist, then there will be conflict on search engines because of the double content that would exist on both highestquest.wordpress.com and my new website. Is this correct?

  • Yes, you are correct about the redirect.

if I choose for highestquest.wordpress.com to still exist, then there will be conflict on search engines because of the double content that would exist on both highestquest.wordpress.com and my new website.

There wouldn’t really be a conflict, these will be two independent sites, however if someone clicks on the old blog, they would be redirected to the new one.

  • Unknown's avatar

I see. And if i were to leave the old blog as it is, would the search engines would pull up results from the old blog more than from the new site, since it is a double content and the old blog has longer history?

Also, is it possible to use the redirect upgrade on my wordpress.com blog without first moving my domain to another registrat?

And my third question is regarding moving my subsrcibers. I use free Jetpack plugin. Is it possible to move them or do i have to upgrade before i can move my subscribers from my old blog at WordPress.com to WordPress.org?

    Thank you,

  • would the search engines would pull up results from the old blog more than from the new site

That is possible, especially at the beginning. It will likely take some time and effort before the new site starts ranking higher than the old one.

is it possible to use the redirect upgrade on my wordpress.com blog without first moving my domain to another registrat?

In theory yes, but bear in mind that you will need some domain to redirect to.

Is it possible to move them or do i have to upgrade before i can move my subscribers from my old blog at WordPress.com to WordPress.org?

You’ll be able to move the subscribers on a free Jetpack plan.

Also, have a look at this guide we prepared on moving to the self-hosted version of WordPress:
