A few questions regarding moving WordPress

    Hi,

    Thanks for the article.

I was wondering why Jetpack plugin on my self-hosted WordPress.org site doesn’t provide with an option to “Follow blog via email” through a widget?
In WordPress.com there is such widget that could be put in sidebar.

  • Hi there,

There is an email subscription form widget available:

    Jetpack

    Hi there,

Great, i have completed moving subsrcibers to the Jetpack plugin.

I have another question. I initatiated the process of domain transfer from WordPress.com to another registrat. I got this message from WordPress.com:

“Your domain is unlocked to prepare for transfer.

We have sent the transfer authorization code to the domain registrant’s email address. You must provide your new registrar with your domain name and transfer code to complete the transfer process.”

I then started the transfer, but have received the message from the new registrat that there is still a Lock on the domain.

Could you please help me so that the lock is released and that my new registrat could complete the transfer of the domain?

    Thank you,

Update: the lock is removed, but I have to wait 5-6 days for transfer to be completed. Is there a way to speed up the process?

  • In this case we don’t have a way to speed it up, but the transfer will happen automatically soon. Cheers!

  • We’re happy to hear the lock was removed successfully. There’s not a way to hurry or speed up the process in this case.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the reply.

I have followed the instruction given here last month about redirecting, but something is not right.

Basically, I have transfered the domain http://www.highestquest.org to another registrat, and from there have redirected it to another website.
Now I am left with http://www.highestquest.wordpress.com, but the option of redirecting the blog to another website is no longer there.

When in the dashboard i click on “Domain”, the only option i have is to change the name of the blog, or to purchase a domain.

Could you please tell me how can i now redirect the blog to another site?

I was told last month here that this is the way to go to redirect my blog to another website, in order to evade the double content and to have old links pointing to the new site.

    Thanks,

  • When you no longer use a custom domain, you won’t be able to redirect the free WordPress.com subdomain by changing the DNS records, you’ll want to purchase the Site Redirect if you wish to maintain that address and redirect the traffic from it to your new site. Here’s more information about it:

    Thanks fresatomica, that was helpful.

So basically what I have done is transfered the domain highestquest.org and redirected it to the new website. I also redirected highestquest.wordpress.com to the new website.

However what is a bit confusing now is that visitors are still accessing my old Highest Quest blog. I can see that because I am getting likes and also new followers there, and in stats I see that I am getting visitors there.
How can that be if I redirected it to the new website?

Also, when I search in search engines for topics that I wrote about in my old blog, they come up under the highestquest.org/ domain. When I click on them, it loads and loads and then I get an error message from my browser saying that the host took too much time to respond.
Last month i moved all my blog content from WordPress.com blog to my new self-hosted WordPress.org website

I inquired about it with my host where my new site is hosted and where I have my domains, but they say that from their side everything is working correcty, and that I should contact the search engines and inquire with them.

Do you know why those links won’t redirect to my new site? Is it related to search engines?

    Thanks,

  • When I try to loa highestquest.wordpress.com, I am being redirected to https://ascendingpath.org/. Is that what you were looking for?
If you see likes on highestquest.wordpress.com, they might be coming from the Reader, from users who don’t open your site and just find your posts and read them in the Reader directly.
As for highestquest.org and how it loads on search engines, we’re not able to help with that as neither the site nor the domain is hosted here.

    >When I try to loa highestquest.wordpress.com, I am being redirected to >https://ascendingpath.org/. Is that what you were looking for?

No, not been looking for that. I know that this is redirecting well.

    >If you see likes on highestquest.wordpress.com, they might be coming from the >Reader, from users who don’t open your site and just find your posts and read >them in the Reader directly.

Oh I see. Then the new likes and subscriptions could have come from that. I’m curious though, if I don’t post on highestquest.wordpress.com any more, then they will not receive any email notification for the new posts that they subscribed to, correct?

    >As for highestquest.org and how it loads on search engines, we’re not able to >help with that as neither the site nor the domain is hosted here.

Alright. I was just curious if the old articles that were on old domain, though now transfered to new site, will eventually be shown on search engines under new site. I guess that’s what one of the previous staff poster in this thread was referring to when he said that search engines will eventually update their database and show current situation.

At first I kind of thought that if someone looks for information in Google and my article comes up under old domain, and that if they click on it it will lead them to the new domain where i transfered that article. But I guess the redirect doesn’t really redirect longer links, but just basic domain name.
