A move to external-hosting of my WP site

I’m exceedingly grateful to WP.com for giving me the space to get confidence with building a site. But I’m now contemplating migrating to an external host … I need to expand my empire a bit :)
I know most of the set-up advice will come via wordpress.org … but I’m wondering if there is any advice I can get here in preparation for a move?
I’m especially keen to know thoughts on what to look for in an external host … and whether the export functions are straightforward for my existing site?

If you’re ready to move to a self-hosted site (with all the additional options and responsibilities), that’s great! :) We have some tips for moving your site that you might want to take a look at.
We have recommended hosts you can consider, although the best choice for you will depend on your needs and what each host has to offer. If you go with one of those recommended hosts, we also have a Guided Transfer service you can purchase to help get you set up with your self-hosted site. Otherwise, you can follow the steps to Export all of your content to move it over yourself.

Hi Rachel—I have a secondary question …
In choosing a host, does location of servers have any impact these days? I ask only because the recommended sites on the WP (dot) org site are all US, but most of my audience would be mainly Europe or Australia. I just wonder whether geography impacts access times to any significant level? -
Hi Michael,
Many website hosts have servers around the world, so even if the hosting company itself is based in the US it doesn’t mean all their servers are located there. If that’s a concern for you, I’d recommend contacting each hosting company for more details about their setup. :)
