A newbie here – a basic dating site feature, and 10GB storage for a video blog?

    Dear bloggers,

I just started learning blogging because I have a blog idea that I hope to make it a reality. I have zero experience on blogging and not technically savvy so have a couple questions before getting started.

    1) I’m trying to build a video blog. I learned WP Premium ($99/year) will give us extra 10 GB storage but is it enough for a video blog? What if I go over?

    2) I’m hoping to dedicate part of my blog to set up a feature similar to an online dating site to provide my subscribers a space to find people with the same / similar qualities / criteria, and wonder if it’s possible at WordPress? And if it is, how do I do that?

Additionally, I also like to learn how to add forum to my blog, but that can wait.

These are the two main questions I have for now, before I start creating.

    Thank you so much.

    Hi there!

These are great questions to be asking before you get started!

First, regarding the video and the space. It depends how you want the videos to display on your website. If you are going to use YouTube or Vimeo, then the videos won’t take up space on your site. If you want the video to be hosted by your WP site, then the storage will be a factor. The next questions are how many videos, what quality they are, and how long they are. Take a look at how large the file is for a video you’ve made in the past that you might want put on your site. Then estimate based on its size how long it would take for you to use up the 10GB.

All that said, you can update your account to get more storage any time so I wouldn’t worry about it too much for now. When you hit your limit you can update or move to YouTube etc.

Second, this part is a little tricky. It’s going to depend on what you are envisioning. If you are thinking that your users will be able to have individual profile pages and be able to private message other users or search for users based on certain qualities, then I don’t think so. :( WP is great for a business site, vlog, blog, and many other types of sites but something that complex is going to require very customized code along with encryption and security, etc. You’d need to have a developer build that for you.

If you are thinking you’ll have a few static pages with open comments where you encourage users to share information about themselves in the comments or interact with each other about certain topics in the comments then that could work.

Other users might be able to shed more light on the second question.

Let me know if any of this is too elementary or too advanced and if you have follow up questions.

    Hope this helps!

    Hey Jason,

Thanks a lot for the reply, especially you’re the only one I’ve got so far. I really appreciate that.

First on the video storage, I do plan to do YouTube so this one is easy.

Second on the online dating feature, at this point, I’m still debating between two different set ups:

    1) the conventional kind, which is what you described in your reply, I.E. users have their profiles, search for matches based on various criteria, interact with one another via messages, chat.etc etc;

    2) users make a short YouTube video to introduce themselves, then submit the link to my blog. I then post them on my blog for other users to search for. But in this set up, I’ll still need to find a system to sort through all the video submissions for users to be able to search for their matches based on certain criteria. And will I be comfortable enough to just let them click on these video and leave my site for YouTube? Eventually, I’m hoping to monetize it, either right from the start or later on. So this is a concern. However, I want to make it as affordable as possible so everyone can benefit from it, regardless of their financial situation. I believe everyone deserves love and the more people find love, the more happy, or at least the more content people we can make in this world, the more peace, thus less war, we can create as a whole.

And then security and scam are also issues I need to concern about.

Another possibility is to combine both 1) and 2) and makes it somehow work for my blog.

I have a new question here. We oftentimes see people commenting at the bottom of a vlog / blog post, does that adding comment feature comes automatically with every WP post, or do we have to install certain plugin for that?

    Thank you so much.

Your welcome! Great idea and very original!

What you described under point 1 would definitely be possible. You could tag or categorize the videos and have a page that has all the videos for that tag/category so they could all be found easily. Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, WP just announced this morning about their awesome new upgrade to their video feature:

    Reinvented Video for WordPress

You could even do something hybrid where you host your videos on YouTube and user videos on WP if they so choose for greater privacy. Lots of options…

As for the comments, yes! The comments are standard! You get those with a free account. You can adjust the setting for comments under Settings –> Discussion and manage existing comments under the “Comments” section from the WP dashboard.

Best to you on your site!

    Peace,
    Jason

Correction: I meant what you describe under point 2 would definitely be possible.*
