A note and request to Staff

I have removed that spam – thanks for the heads-up.

Even though measures are being taken to block sp*m, this morning (my time) has been another exasperating example of why other means should be added to them to auto-hide or auto-remove certain posts.

I have no doubt that it could be done. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

several hundred spam posts – some were starting new posts quicker than once a minute, one spammer alone had over 75 Posts in less than two hours . some had 60++ links to blogger – any intern should be able to filter that – maybe they should check and see if their subscription to Akismet has expired and not been renewed?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve informed staff on modlook.wordpress.com as well. They should be aware of this.

One of the spammers had even created over 120 topics in three hours. And it looks like this ‘ymolla80’ guy is just getting warm. :(

  • Unknown's avatar

And why does so much of the spam use the Login tag? https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/login I CONSTANTLY find people making blog posts in the forum using that tag.

  • Unknown's avatar

I guess it’s maybe the result of a spam script. It probably adds the tag when trying to log in or something like that.

On a side note: the problem is maybe the ease of account creation. Maybe Automattic should start adding a Captcha or some other protection in order to create a WordPress.com account.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’d rather have thousands of spam messages in the forums, on my blog and everywhere else, than have WP introduce the hated Captcha!! (even though I agree their appearance on the forums is becoming infuriating).

  • Unknown's avatar

Agreed! Although I’d be happy just to quell the outbreak in the forums!

Had to search the spirituality tag in the Reader yesterday and boy some of the things that were coming up were junk posts with a bazillion links. Yes, duly reported.

As we say in Hebrew “die!” which means “enough already!” It’s gotten nearly to the point where the forums become unusable for anyone visiting via the forum front page.

There has to be a better method of dealing with this. I certainly don’t need or want to spend my limited online time manually marking spam or sites, nor should anyone else. Regardless of jackiedana’s comments above about the current means in place, it’s apparently just not enough.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not too keen on Captchas as well. Especially the ones where you merely can guess than recognize any of the distorted characters. That’s why I said “some other protection”.

They should do something so that account creation isn’t script-able by these spammers. Maybe it can be limited to users who create their first account. In this way all verified users who want to create another account won’t be bothered.

The forum anti-spam used to filter on external web links – I know because some of my answers with 4 outside links in them were caught and marked as spam, as well as my username – that is obviously way broken now as many of the spam posts had over 60 blogger links in them.

The forum is broken now and for some reason the staff don’t seem willing to spend a few minutes to see why, they just leave things until we have hundreds of spam postings flagged then they show up and clean things up then go back where they came from

CATPCHA. does not seem to do much other than irritate regular people and for sure limits anyone that has vision problems,

I have old but regular eyes and catpcha just irritates me – would greatly reduce my helping in the forum if every time I make a post I need to fill in a catpcha form.

Get real – starting NEW 25 Posts in 30 minutes is not normal behavior – I can see two or three new posts in a few minutes if I have problems I need help with and I want to put them in individual threads so as to keep the answers related

Get real – starting NEW 25 Posts in 30 minutes is not normal behavior

Exactly! Surely that behavior can be detected and a script can be created to deep six threads when it is detected.

For what it’s worth, we share your sentiments. :)

Help us out by reporting one post per spammer (with the modlook tag). In most cases that will be sufficient. No need to also tag spammer if it’s obvious, and no need to tag each subsequent post.

If you have more questions or concerns about this, feel free to email me privately.

This is what I do. I tag the first thread only with “spammer” and do add any other tags. I click into the blog and report it to ToS Staff as a spam blog and I post the forum thread link into my report.

do add = do NOT add
    sorry :(
