A Possible Bug In Image Block Or Jetpack App
-
Hi! I’m just starting a new photo blog, and also have just (within the past day or two) started using the new Android Jetpack App for WordPress. I have a possible bug to report that I’ve noticed, concerning captions in the Image block used in the new Jetpack App.
The bug is this: I posted an image to a blog post with a caption attached to the image block. The blog post, along with the image, uploaded and posted with no problem, except when I go into my dashboard on my laptop browser (Firefox – Windows 10), and look at the photo in Media, the caption is not there. I don’t think the browser or laptop has anything to do with this. I just mentioned it to show I checked on another device, and would probably be the same thing if I check my dashboard through my phone’s browser.
So unless I go into my Media on my laptop, after posting a photo using the Image Block in the Android Jetpack App, and manually put that caption in the photo details, when/if I post that photo somewhere else in another blog post, the caption will not be there.
Is this normal behavior for the Image Block, used in the Android Jetpack App, that I should expect normally? Or is the caption supposed to be captured in Media along with the photo upon posting?
Thanks for your help.

I don’t know why the “blog I need help with” didn’t post above, but it’s https://mpiix.wordpress.com that I just started this week, and it’s the first photo on this blog post I’m referring to above – https://mpiix.wordpress.com/2023/01/18/dt-photo-0002/

UPDATE – I apologize if I wasted anyone’s time with this issue. Apparently this is operator malfunction on my part. I tried another post, and I’ve discovered that if you upload the photo to your Media through the Jetpack App first, before trying to make a blog post, and add your caption to the photo there, your Media will retain the photo along with the caption, both in the app, and in your dashboard on your computer browser as well. I’m guessing that has always been the normal way to do things regardless whether you are in the WordPress App, the Jetpack App, or computer browser in the dashboard… but people like me have to learn the hard way how to do it the easy way lol.
Also apparently WordPress isn’t (maybe?) designed to automatically retain a caption in Media from the Image Block directly as I thought it should be able to.

Hi! I understand what you mean. As you saw, adding a caption via the image block does indeed mean you’re only adding it on the page/post where the block is inserted; meanwhile adding a caption via the Media library means that it’ll be automatically imported to an image block (but can be edited in the image block, as the caption there is ‘detached’ from the Media library).
It’s mentioned here as a note too:

https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/#captionsThanks for that link and the explanation of what is happening. I did not realize that the caption is separate if inserted in a blog post from where it will be store in the Media.
I do have a suggest for the Jetpack App now regarding photo captions. I’ve noticed that text does not carry over when entering a caption. So if you have a few sentences in your caption, the writing continues on one line. It would be very helpful if this can at all be fixed so that text can carry over to a new line, similar to how we are typing here, or in a blog post.

Hi @dtpiixart,
I see what you mean. Thank you for the suggestion. We’ll definitely report this internally for future consideration.
Thanks!
