A question about the free themes

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a blog here. It took me a while to find the most suitable theme for it. Now I want to start a secondary blog, but my theme is gone. Is there any way to expand the primary bolgs’ theme to include the secondary?
    The primary bolg: https://lweaveswords.wordpress.com/

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

The theme from your first blog does not transfer/copy to newly made blogs. If you would like to use the same theme you have to activate it on the new blog too.

  • Unknown's avatar

And just to add that if the unnamed theme on your original site has been retired since you activated it then you won’t be able to use that same theme on a newly created site.

  • Unknown's avatar

well, I thank you both, but was hoping to get in touch with a WordPress technical person/web programmer. It is all software, and software can be manipulated by the creator, even copied… How can I get in touch with such a person?

  • Unknown's avatar

You still haven’t revealed the name of the theme in question so I’m still guessing here. No doubt if it is retired it will still be available to download and use on a site hosted elsewhere using the WordPress.org software. It can most likely be used here at WordPress.com if you upgraded to the Business plan.

but was hoping to get in touch with a WordPress technical person/web programmer. It is all software, and software can be manipulated by the creator,

Here at WordPress.com the idea is to keep things simple for users, with limits on how much customization is possible. Using the WordPress.org software gives you infinite options.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Hi, the theme in use on lweaveswords.wordpress.com is “Button” which as @themagicrobot indicated has been retired. Retired themes are not updated to use the latest WordPressdotcom features and at some point it may break your site.

You won’t be able to use that retired theme on a new WordPressdotcom site, but have a look at Button 2 https://wordpress.com/theme/button-2

If you aren’t interested in the Button 2 theme, let us know what features you are looking for and perhaps we can make some suggestions.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you both @themagicrobot and @justjennifer! Yes, my theme was the original button, and for the new blog I chose button2 for lack of any other choice. However, it was troublesome. At first, I didn’t see the category on preview, and not even when I published the post. That is what prompted my first appeal, as I see the category as part of the text. Later it appeared right where it should have been and that was all right. Now, I don’t see the Like button, even though I marked it to be shown everywhere I knew to mark it. Besides, button2 seems much heavier than the original button.
And @justjennifer, what do you mean by ‘break my site’?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello again – WordPressdotcom’s developers continually roll out updates to our shared platform. Should one of those updates break a theme’s code, the only themes that are fixed for that issue are the currently active ones shown in our Theme Showcase. However, retired themes are updated if there is a security issue involved.

Could you explain what you mean by “heavier”? Here are the demo sites for Button and Button 2.

In all this I noted that you haven’t provided the link to the new site. If you would provide that we might be able to help you troubleshoot the other issues you mentioned.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thank you for explaining :-)
I’m currently using both Buttons and I’m sorry, I simply forgot to link the second:
    https://israelilifesmoments.home.blog/
I also am using (most unfortunately) an old and feeble computer. So by heavy I meant loading time on my computer. It seems longer than the first. Firefox may augment it by working on its’ own in the background…
And with this secondary blog I still do not see the Like button. Can you tell me why?

  • Unknown's avatar

    No Problem. :)

Just to confirm, is the box next to “show Like button” checked in your settings at https://wordpress.com/sharing/buttons/israelilifesmoments.home.blog and you saved your changes? This is one of those screens that you have to click the Save button on. It doesn’t autosave.

If you are using an up to date browser like, FF or Chrome, that will help somewhat with speed.

  • Unknown's avatar

Just to clarify, it’s the Like setting under “Reblog & Like”. (I see you already have comment Likes enabled.)

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks again! I never saw the page you linked. I still use the old-old dashboard. It was checked. I hit save anyway. I checked the blog again and it is still not there. Maybe it takes time?
On second thought, is the reblog connected to the like? Because that I don’t want so I disabled it.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, they are separate. You don’t need to enable the Reblog function in order to enable Likes.

If you’ve enabled the Likes function either in your MySites dashboard or in the WP Admin dashboard, they should be showing up on your site. Since it doesn’t look like they are (I also looked at your site in an incognito window just to make sure I wasn’t seeing in a cached version), can you open one of your posts for editing and double check in the sidebar under Likes & Shares there that Sharing is enabled.

And if you are editing in WP Admin, do you have the new Block Editor enabled or are you using the Classic Editor?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m using wp-admin and its’ own editor, moving to the classic just for alignment. And yes, I checked every one of the Likes that was there. I double check that it is checked with every new post as well.
I rechecked now that it is there and saved again in the wp-admin.

  • Unknown's avatar

    OK-thanks for checking again.

Since we’ve established that you see the settings which would allow for Likes to display on your Posts on israelilifesmoments.home.blog and they are not displaying, I’ve tagged this thread for Staff assistance.

It may be a bug with an RTL site, but only Staff would be able to check the cause of this issue. Thanks for your patience in the meantime while they get back to you.

And thank you too, it’s always a pleasure to deal with professionals :-)

    Hi lweaves,

I’m just summarising what I can see, to make sure I’m on the same wavelength :)

    • Likes are enabled for all posts from Settings > Sharing in your WP Admin dashboard: https://lweaveswords.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=sharing
    • All posts on the front page have a Like button except “חוֹדים וקווים | Spikes and Lines”
    • “חוֹדים וקווים | Spikes and Lines” does have a Like button when you click through to the individual post

I rechecked now that it is there and saved again in the wp-admin.

Did the Like buttons only start appearing after you rechecked the option in sharing settings (from the new interface)?

Just let me know and we can go from there.

    @justjennifer
, @themagicrobot and @synapsemage — appreciate you helping to test this issue.

  • Unknown's avatar

Spikes and lines is a posting to my primary blog, which I opened several years ago. That didn’t have a Likes problem.
The problem is with my secondary blog, which I opened a few days ago, and does not show the Likes button anywhere, although it seems as if I’ve checked it everywhere.
    The secondary is here: https://israelilifesmoments.home.blog/
Sorry for the delay in my response, I was asleep. Awoke now. I’ll try to check emails often today.
And my thanks to all of you :-)

  • Hi there,

This is happening because the Like Button option is disabled on your Sharing settings. Please enable it by following these instructions:

    Add a Like Button

Please note that even though you have enabled Likes on individual posts, the global setting must be enabled for it to work.

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually, it was enabled. What was not checked, was the list above it. I checked the list now and it appeared. Thank you very much :-)
Good day to you and a happy weekend.
