A question I really hate to ask

    I’ve scoured support and the forums for everything to do with using WordPress to make money. Obviously, it’s a no no. But I’ve found very little on the subject of seeking donations for the purpose of equipment upgrades to keep a blog alive. I’m currently using an old 450mhz PIII machine running Windows98SE to maintain this blog. And while I’m not a PC expert, I have to think that my ancient setup is what makes editing and posting to my blog such a monumental task. Not to mention the fact that I’m getting to where none of the recent versions of the free software I use will run on my machine.

    So I have two questions. 1: What is the prevalent thinking when it comes to asking for donations for such a purpose? 2: If it’s acceptable, what would be the best way to go about it?

    Donations are fine. Many people put a paypal donate button on their sites here, and here is the support document that explains how to do it: http://support.wordpress.com/paypal/ .

    Thanks TSP. I had looked at that page as well as the PayPal site to do some preliminary research, but I got confused with terminology like “merchant” and “organization name/service.” These terms seem to imply that I am either selling something or am an official charitable organization – neither of with are true. And apparently, you have to be a member already to get help beyond what is provided at the site – which also didn’t seem to fit. And when I tried to become a member so I could ask a more detailed question, I was asked for bank account info which I couldn’t provide because I didn’t want to set up an account until I knew that this was a workable solution.

    Anyway, this Catch-22 situation has me now receiving emails from PayPal offering more services when, until I got your response, I didn’t even know if their service was useful to me and in spite of the fact that I’ve still not given them bank account info.

    So I guess I could just “wing it” by setting up the account, providing them with the info, and then following the instructions provided on the support page.

    Any additional thoughts?
