    Hey @wsinowyny,

When you map your domain with an IP, that is not a constant value, they change over time, and when that happens your site will break.
Why don’t you use WordPress.com name servers,

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

You can find your A records on your own by typing this at a command prompt:

    nslookup yourdomainname.com ns1.wordpress.com

    Thanks !!!

Hi there, mapping your domain is the way to go if you are concerned at all with seo and search engines. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

To map a domain, you will need at least the Personal upgrade plan.

Thanks for the above, however, we want to preserve our current DNS hosting, hence we are looking for the A record mapping onto current IPs. We are fully aware of the dynamicity of the IPs.

  • Hi, I can see you don’t have a plan yet, and your IP address could actually change depending on what plan and options you pick.

But after you add your plan, and after you map the domain, but prior to pointing it to our servers, you can find its A records from a command prompt with this command, modified with your own domain:

    nslookup yourgroovydomain.com ns1.wordpress.com

You’ll note if you do it without the ns1.wordpress.com at the end, you’ll find the domain’s current A records. Adding ns1.wordpress.com shows you what our name servers would point to if you were using them.

If you get more than one IP address in the results, add them each as individual A records.

  • Sorry, one more note: I did want to mention as well, if you have MX entries or subdomains or whatever else that you need, and that’s your main reason for sticking with your current DNS hosting, note you can add those records here, too:

Unfortunately, mapping domains to WordPress sites via the use of an “A” or “AAAA” record is not possible. You must point the domain to the WordPress.com name servers from your current domain registrar. Please visit the following link for specifics:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

By doing this, sites can take advantage of the WordPress.com CDN (Content Delivery Network) and provide faster response times. This is accomplished by hosting websites on several servers across the globe. Therefore, you cannot map directly to a specific server. If you need to map any sub-domains, records for those can be set within your WordPress.com domain settings panel after you have pointed your domain to the WordPress.com name servers.
