‘A Records’ for a domain name that I already own

    I’m trying to use a domain name that I already own, with a WordPress hosted website. I have followed the information on your Support site up to a point, but I’ve run into an issue because the registrar provides an email service so I cannot change the nameservers.

    I found the following information on your Support website (https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/):

    ‘…there are some instances where using A records may be the best or only option based on your existing registrar. Please contact our support to obtain the current A records.’

    I think that this is the case in this situation. Can you tell me the current A records to add to my domain name please? Many thanks.

    Howdy –

    What domain are you working on? I’d like to just see where it is registered because name servers are the best practice for domain mapping.

    There aren’t any sites registered to your WordPress.com account. Are you trying to connect this domain to the managed environment service from WordPress.com? or use the open source, community maintained, WordPress installation? These are 2 different versions of WordPress.

    Thank you for your reply. I’d rather not discuss the specifics on a public forum. However I’d be more than happy to do so if you have a private support channel.

    In order to continue using the hosted email service that is associated with the domain name, I’m unable to update the nameservers. That is why I’m enquiring about the A Records as mentioned on the support page that I linked to.

    I am doing this on behalf of a less technical 3rd party who does have a WordPress website that is in a managed environment service from WordPress.com. That is why you don’t see any sites registered to my own WordPress.com account.

    If you could provide me with the A Records I be would be most grateful. Many thanks for your time.

    Hi midgetsquid, I’d actually recommend setting up the email DNS entries here:

    Manage Your DNS Records

    You can do that before the domain is pointed here.

    If you want to look up the A records for a domain though, on our servers, you can do it like so from a command prompt. You may need to periodically change the settings, though, which is why we recommend letting us handle the A records.

    nslookup yourgroovydomain.com ns1.wordpress.com
