A suggestion for comments.
-
There should be a “preview” option for comments so people can proof their comments before submitting them. I’m not suggesting they should be able to edit them after they’ve been posted, but we should have the ability to proof them for errors.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Having a way to prevent/avoid typos would be great.
There’s nothing worse that noticing them as soon as we press Reply, and the comment is live for the whole world to see :s . -
It’s especially annoying when one has put in a bunch of HTML for hyperlinks and whatnot. Even here on this forum I should be able to “preview” this reply before submitting it.

This is such a great idea! I edit blog comments if people ask, but other bloggers often don’t (Of course, I’m pretty sure they have more followers than me). Blogger has a way of previewing, OR of sending the comment right away.
I really hope WordPress does this!

Well, I guess most sites including fb n twitter don’t have such options but it could be a great idea

Well idealfreelance1, any sites that use “Disqus” for their comment service have an “edit” option as part of the service. After posting, the person who posted the comment and nobody else, can proofread it and click on “edit” to make corrections. CommonDreams , Truthout and Alternet are a few that come to mind.
I’ve seen a number of sites that offer a “preview” option that allows the poster to proofread and make corrections before submitting comments.
Given the overall quality, high profile and longevity of WordPress I don’t see how it would too much for them to handle.

Interestingly so, WordPress/Automattic acquired IntenseDebate which is a Disqus-like service, a few years ago. However, it doesn’t seem like much of it has been integrated onto WordPress.com.
IntenseDebate also has a reputation score feature which I think could be a nice to have for everyone on the WordPress.com network. It could be an incentive for a better quality of commenting, kind of like the Karma points on reddit.
Maybe a WordPress staff could chime in to let us know if some changes are to be expected on the Comment section on the blogs, in the near or far future?

Hi everyone,
While I am unaware of any changes being planned for the comment system right now, I really like the idea of a comment preview. I have taken your suggestion and added it to our queue of ideas. These ideas are reviewed regularly and those which find an audience with our developers are put on our roadmap for addition.
Of course I have no idea when or even if this will be implemented, but it is at least going to get seen by the folks who make these decisions!

Well amightywp, at least we now know that someone from WordPress checks these forums occasionally. Thank you.
Maybe they could just add in something like a simplified version of the “edit post” module. It would be very nice to be able to add formatting and hyperlinks without needing to use HTML.
-
The suggestion to be able to edit posts is an old one, but I can add a vote for that one too, if you’d like!
-
Sorry. Guess I wasn’t clear on my last comment.
We’re already able to edit posts in our WordPress blogs. When a blog owner views their blog, while logged in, it’s just a matter of clicking on “<i>edit</i>” at the top of the post. When you do that, you’re taken to a nice editing module where you can make changes to your post, save them and update the post to the edited version.
Since that “<i>edit</i>” module is already part of the WordPress structure, I thought maybe a simplified version could be added to the comments module.

I’ve gotten so accustomed to using tags and HTML for comments that I forgot I didn’t need them here.
By the way, Blogger has a “preview” option as part of the comments section.
Just sayin’

Ah, I understand what you mean! Apologies for not catching on sooner.
Unfortunately when we’re talking about making a change which effects several million sites, there is no such thing as a simple change, so just adding modules in other places is not always as easy as it sounds. With that said, I will definitely pass along your suggestions!
