a theme that has left and right sidebars with centre content?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I’m trying to setup a site that has left and right side bars that I can fill with content while the centre column can be posts or assorted content (see perrymarshall.com as an example of what I’m talking about). I don’t need fancy features like sliders/etc, but would like it to responsive for ipad/iphone type displays. Any suggestions?

Have you looked at Coraline? I think it might work for you:

It can be configured several ways, but here’s what it looks like with left and right sidebars: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/coraline/#jp-carousel-358

thanks lizthefair! that looks like a great option… but I read through the page and it refers to a custom design upgrade to be able to change fonts? $30/yr or else i’m limited to the standard colors/fonts? I’ve done web design before (html/css) so I can make my own changes but is this theme that limited that you can’t change anything?

You cannot change the font family size or color on any titles in any free hosted WordPress.com blog without a custom design upgrade. That upgrade applies to a single blog and is for a single year.

If you are into fiddling about with font size each and every post you make by using the Text editor (HTML editor) then you can change it in the body text in posts and pages.

These are 3 ways to change fonts on WordPress.com blogs.

    (1) Changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the Text ie. HTML editor. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/formatting-text-pt-5/

    (2) Changing font colors in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page using the #4 icon (Select text color – change the text color) in Row 2 the Visual editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2

    (3) Changing all font families, colors and sizes throughout the whole blog by purchasing an annually renewable Custom Design upgrade and using Typekit Fonts with Staff support.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#custom-fonts

Please use this link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform so you can copy and paste your text into a thread that will appear in the CSS Forum where you will get the help you need.

WordPress.com sells custom design upgrades. They allow us to “preview” change that do not actually display on the blog unless we purchase the upgrade.

If you have not purchased the custom design upgrade note that no changes you try out aside from those such as Custom Background, Custom Header, etc. which are stated on the theme description pages in the features column (right hand side) will be visible to visitors.

You do not need to load the design tools unless you have the Custom Design upgrade. All of these functions can be accessed from your dashboard – without loading the custom design tools – no upgrade required.
    Appearance > Header
    Appearance > Background
Appearance > Theme Options (applicable only to some themes)
Settings > Reading (set a static front page)
Site Title and Tagline > Settings > General

If you are using the preview mode for the Custom Design upgrade some of the settings in that mode will save but they won’t show up on the front end unless you purchase the upgrade.

To go back to the free options, go to Appearance → Themes → Customize → Colors and click the “exit the preview” link in yellow at the top of the panel on the right.

Actually all of the themes on WordPress.COM have that stipulation. It’s one of the tradeoffs between a self-hosted WordPress site and a site hosted on WordPress.COM.

Here’s a rundown of the difference so you can make an informed choice of how to move forward: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

You can also use Coraline on a self-hosted site and wouldn’t have to pay for the upgrade. (You would have to pay for hosting and would be responsible for your own security and the like. Thus the “trade-off”)

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions!

little more information: i already have the self-hosted WP set up and I bought avada theme ($58) and was trying to customize it but realized
that i couldn’t do 3 columns and that was where I decided i needed to go (I assumed avada would be able to have 3 columns because there’s so many layout options but it’s overkill for my needs). Avada has multiple columns but its a ‘portfolio’ layout and i’d be wasting a ton of time trying to customize it when all i want is pretty basic (left and right sidebars with content in the middle).

I don’t want a cheap basic theme that i have to pay to make changes to (i’ll buy the theme if it has the features i want which are specifically to look like perrymarshall.com (only site i saw that was similar to what i want) but still has advanced features like responsive design for mobile etc.

Gottcha. The problem isn’t with the theme so much as that you are asking your question to the wrong people ;)

If you want to use Coraline on a self-hosted site you can do so for free, and you won’t have to pay make CSS modifications. Here’s the direct link to the Self-hosted version of the theme: http://wordpress.org/themes/coraline

For future questions you will avoid confusion by asking in the support forum dedicated to self-hosted WordPress sites. you can find it here:

oops, am i in the forum area for wordpress hosted sites? sorry! :) but i did find out about coraline so i’ll dig deeper :) thanks to both for your help!

@wyattea no worries, it happens all the time.

Generally speaking if you are talking about WordPress in a blue environment it’s WordPress.COM (WordPress hosted) and if it’s grey it’s self-hosted (WordPress.ORG).

Happy to point you toward a theme though. I used Coraline for many years and she served me well. :)
