A way to "temporarily" take blog down?
-
Is there a way I could take my blog down for a while without it looking like it was deleted or gone? I tried this a couple years ago and the message said it was private and people had to sign up for it. I didn’t like that at all.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The only site visibility options are here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

How do you propose to take a blog off the internet without leaving a hole behind where the blog was? If it’s not there, it will look gone.
YOu can set it to Private as you said, on the Settings->Reading page or you can leave one page up saying “This blog is temporarily closed” and use teh bulk editor to change the status of every other post to “Private” which makes them un-findable. But incoming links from old links will all go to a 404 page.

All I want is a page that says blog temporarily unavailable. I need a break from it but do not want to lose all the material I’ve put into it over the years. Why is that so unreasonable?

You have blogged here for 2 years and I assume you know how to create a Page and them make it a static front page. But doing that does not prevent visitors form accessing the rest of the content in your blog.
By default the front page of your blog displays all published posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. That is for the convenience of your returning visitors, who come to read your latest post, and who are not likely to be happy with being compelled to click through the same static page with the same blah, blah, blah on it every time they visit the blog looking for the latest post.
However, if you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, and know that static front pages are traffic killers, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts. To do that create two pages first http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.

Any options above will leave a hole so to speak and upset search engines and your loyal viewers
Why not just put a single Post that says to the effect “On Vacation / Taking a break – thanks for your support and visiting over the years” and leave the rest of the content in place
Most of us understand that making a blog with a lot of content on it takes a lot of effort and I would not get upset at an “On Vacation” note – might even leave a comment about thanks for the fish and have a nice trip
-
I wouldn’t do that myself. What I would do is close all the comments and let the blog sit until wanted to return to it.

Read what I said. I gave you the instructions and the ramifications. And what you can do on your own website has the same list of ramifications, if you’re not aware of it.

@TT – did not think about the content theft – I have seen a few (not many) “on vacation” – – most people just let the blog sit without any notice until they get back – then post a note that they just needed to take a break
