A weird category keeps automatically appearing on my blog.

Hi, I need help with something. I’ve been having some strange problems when I make a new “page” for my blog. Every time I make a new page, is see something in “file under” with the number 1 there. The link links to “http://handheldwii.wordpress.com/category/” which just take me back to my site. When I check the category section in my account, a strange category called “1” is there, even though I never created such a category in the first place.

    Why is this happening?

Wait, I’m sorry, I meant this link to “1” is http://wordpress.com/tag/1/ I never put it there. It just appears by itself.

Go to options > writing and set a default category for your posts. The delete the “1” category and you should be OK. I’m assuming that you deleted the “uncategorized” category, which was the default so the system is making a new default since one is not set.

I checked it and it was set to my news category by default, but it’s still happening. Also, it happens only to my “pages” not my posts. Every time I delete it, I go back and look, it’s back. Then I go back into my dash board and this “1” appears in my categories.

Check your previous post and make sure one of them doesn’t have the “1” category assigned to it.

Never mind I just looked and you just have a few test posts. Rename the “1” category and then try deleting it and see if it stays gone.

This just gets weirder. This only happens to my “Contact Me” section. After choosing my news section as the default, I now see it filed under news, but the link is “http://wordpress.com/tag/news/” but I don’t see any extra categories created in either my pages or categories section.

After even more investigations, I discovered that my reviews, previews, and news sections are link to wordpress.com/news/preview/review. For some strange reason, only my “About Us” section is filed under “Uncategorized”. Weird.

The category links displayed under or over the posts lead to the global tags pages. That will display all posts by any wp.com blogger that use that particular category. The category links in your category widgets (in your sidebar) lead to your local category pages. That is the way it’s designed here.

Ok, I just tried some testing, and I found out that my recreating a “Uncategorized” category, I can have it filed under Uncategorized, but unfortunately, if I try to click on the other categories to the right of my post when I make a new one, the ones not named “Uncategorized” will still link back to wordpress.com/tag/whatever. Is there a way to solve this?

Oh ok, then there’s nothing I can do about it, huh? Well, if it’s link that for everyone else, then it’s no big deal. Thanks for all your help.

Yup, nothing really that you can do about it. There are some that have used the CSS upgrade to hide the categories on the posts but that typically takes other things away as well. I’m thinking someone of the CSS guru’s had figured out how to change it (with the CSS upgrade), but alas, they are no longer hanging around the forums.
