Ability to add logo is not in download version

Hello, I’m using the Gazette template and found that there is an option to add logo to the site title when I log in WP.com and make changes live.

    Building Site Offline
When I downloaded a copy of the Gazette template for offline use, the function for adding logo disappeared. Is it not available on the offline version or how do I get it back?

    Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. The site logo is a WordPress.com feature, and isn’t a standard feature on themes for the self-hosted WordPress.org software. The two versions of WordPress are completely separate and different, and so are their themes, even if the themes have the same name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

In this forum we can only help you with the WordPress.com version of the theme, not the self-hosted/offline version. I want to recall you need a plugin to add a site logo to a WordPress.org theme, but I’m not sure. For help with that you’ll need to post in the WordPress.org support forums: http://wordpress.org/support/ If you don’t already have a username on that forum, click the register button in the upper right corner so you can post in that forum.

That helps. I think ultimately I wanted WordPress.com to host my site, but was taught to import an offline version, build it offline, and then import back to WP.com. Does this mean that I can add the logo after it’s been imported or should I find that plugin. Thank you for your help!

You cannot export and import wordpress.COM versions of themes. Our versions are licensed for use only on WordPress.COM software. They are not for WordPress.ORG software.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  • Ah, okay. Thing is, you’re actually wasting your time with that approach, as you’ll ONLY be able to import your content (i.e. posts and pages) from the offline site to the WordPress.com site. Nothing else, none of the images, customisations, menus, anything, will be possible to import, as the offline site you’re building uses a completely different version of the software as we do here, and we have no option here to import that type of information and no access to the base files of our sites. The two platforms also operate differently, so you’re now learning how WorPress.org works, just so you can learn how WordPress.com works all over again when you’re ready to go live.

My suggestion would be to rather build your site on WordPress.com from the start, if here is where you want your site to be hosted. You can set your site to private so that only you have access while getting it ready. While private, other people won’t be able to see it, nor will search engines be able to index it. Then, once you’re ready you can set it to public. I think ultimately you’ll find this approach simpler.

You can set a site to private under Settings ->Reading in the dashboard. https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Yo! I’m back, sort of. I’m so exhausted after the concert weekend that I may have to take a nap.

You should be able to upload a logo if you have the Jetpack plugin installed. When you have installed Jetpack, activate the Site Icon. Once that’s activated, head over to Settings -> General -> Site Icon to upload. Or, you’ll find that it’s back in the customizer just like your wordpress.com site.

The Jetpack activates a lot of options that are necessary to make your standalone site more like your WordPress.com site.

If you have any questions about Jetpack and Site Icon functionality, just head over to the https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack Jetpack forum.

    Cheers!
