ability to set viewer permissions
-
Is it possible to create WordPress websites that are part public and part private? I.e., If I want some content to be open and searchable, can I also lock down certain content posts/sections to be private only to those who are registered?

Hi, there.
You can control access for specific content in the post visibility settings described here.

I hope this helps.

Thank you! If i set the entire site to private by default, will the visibility module allow me to make specific posts/pages public?
It seems like I can’t choose to make it completely public from the options I’m seeing unless I’m missing something.
The only other option is to make it all public and then lock down only the pages I would like to be listed as private, however I’ll have far more pages in that will fall into the private category than the other way around, so I was hoping to be able to avoid that.

If the site is set to private, you won’t be able to make certain posts public. Here’s info on site privacy settings.

The option you describe to make it all public and then make specific posts private is the one that will work to do what you initially asked.
You could also consider creating a second site for the public content, and keeping the current one all private.
