Ability to underline in a post disappeared

Today, my ability to underline text in my post disappeared. Will that ability be returned to our post creation page? Thank you for checking into this.

I have just found the same thing. Plus the “Justify” text button has gone too! This happened on another WP hosted site a few months back I work on, and has now occurred on my own site.
Pic for proof:

@leeinblack are you using wordpress.com/post?
Your justify button is in the second row. If you don’t see the second row, you can toggle it with the three dots on the right.
-
No I’m one of those stubborn luddites still using the classic editor as I don’t like the new one.
A WP helper on Twitter told me about keyboard shortcuts so I’ll give them a go, although I don’t understand why these functions would be removed, unless it is just to spite us old school rebels. :-/
Thanks for your reply anyway. :-)

Will these buttons be coming back for those of us who refuse to use the newer editor? It’s extremely frustrating and annoying, not to mention taking twice as long, to successfully justify text now. Pushing Command J does nothing for me.
-
Ah I understand now. Yeah, the WordPress.org community debated this and ultimately decided to remove those buttons:
– Underlines that aren’t links are a confusing experience for your readers
– Justified text devolves on the smaller screens so many of your users are using these days. @leeinblack, here’s an example from your site:
https://cloudup.com/cLeiF6D_uGII see those changes were implemented here recently.
I understand, though, that you can use keyboard shortcuts instead if you really want to:

Hi Supernovia,
Going to “wordpress.com/post” brings up “404 Page Not Found“.Also, regarding TimeThief’s suggestions, I post on FireFox and have their latest update — use my desktop with Windows 10 with everything updated — and am connected to fiber optics.
I am one of those old folk who likes the old ways. It’s just more comfortable — and it works well — at least it used to over the last eight years of posting. Thank you all for working out a solution.

Hi again, Supernovia,
Guess I posted the above at the same time you posted an explanation. I think I’ll have to write down how to underline on a Post It note and stick it to my monitor. Us old folk get a bit forgetful, but still like to be active. That list of keyboard short cuts is long — to say the least. Using the mouse on buttons is much more convenient, faster, and efficient. Sigh! I’ve also noted on a number other software “updates”, that others have also made navigating much more cumbersome and illogical. Guess younger software engineers of every sort see things differently.

Supernovia,
Don’t know why wordpress.com/post doesn’t work — but don’t really know what it was supposed to do. I’m satisfied to post the way I have been for years, so don’t think I need to change.
I made my Post It note, and think I will only need it for underlining. The other buttons that I am in the habit of using seem to all be there. Thanks for everything.

Thanks for the explanation. I can’t say I am completely happy since I am not a regular to these forums (unless something goes wrong) and this feels like a decision made by the few rather than the masses.
I sort of get the rationale, but as a desktop user only, I have no knowledge of how it looks on a phone but for me personally, unjustified just looks unsightly (blame my OCD if you like). No-one has said anything which means either no-one reads my posts or they are simply used to it. :-P
Since pretty much most text links are brightly coloured, do people really mistake a simple underline for a link? Wow…
Also, WP are remiss, in my opinion, for not sending notice of this or any development out to all users to ensure everyone learns about them rather than just summarily removing something and having people wake up the next day to find it things are gone or changed. That’s just rude.
Please note that I’m not having a go at you personally Supernovia, you’re doing just the soldier on the front line taking the shots for the generals back in the war room.
Anyway, it’s done now and we’re stuck with it.
Rant over! ;-)
Thanks again for your response and attention to this matter. :-)

@leeinblack yeah, I understand. This was a decision by the community (not even by WordPress.com), but we find the masses are visiting sites by phone more often than not. Our editor may follow suit at some point; we’ll see.
You are free to still use keyboard shortcuts as you’d like.
One thing you could do, too, is get a plan that supports CSS, then set up *all* of your posts to justify automatically until they reach a certain screen width.
-
@96isaiah I understand; my dad uses post-its too. Just remember ctrl+u — like ctrl+c for copy but with a U for underline instead.
And if you haven’t been using ctrl+c and ctrl+v for copying and pasting, be sure to write those down too! Should save you a bundle of time once you get the hang of it. :)

Supernovia,
Regarding “Should save you a bundle of time once you get the hang of it. :)” Are you kidding!? Just wait til you get old. There’s nothing faster than point and click with the good ol’ mouse.I prefer other brain exercises to stave off dementia…. : ) Things like word games are much better and more fun than keyed patterns on a keyboard. Plus, it’s more productive to keep one’s mind on what you’re trying to say instead of trying to recollect those various codes.
Thank you for everything and have a great day.

Thanks for the suggestion but I’m an old git who is happy that simple one click solutions exist, so things like CSS are beyond my aged ken I’m afraid. :-/
