Abnormal Traffic and Yesterday's Redoable Lite Problem
-
I’m starting this thread at the request of of jackiedana from one of the Redoable Lite threads yesterday.
The first thing I noted wrong yesterday was a spike in the hourly traffic meter at the top of the WordPress dashboard. Spikes happen, usually because some other site has linked to us, but this one was very unusual in that it had no identifiable referrer and wasn’t going to a specific page or post. Rather, all the traffic was going to the homepage, and there wasn’t any identifiable source in either “Referrers” or “Search Engine Terms”. The really strange thing is that all of it was identified in the “Views by Country” section as coming from Ireland.
To give this a little scale, the current 30 day summary for traffic on my site (Dead Homer Society) shows 2,504 pageviews from Ireland. 1,286 of them came yesterday. Adding to the oddity, the number of unique visitors remained basically unchanged from normal. Only the pageviews spiked.
I asked in the other thread if anyone else was experiencing the same thing, and two people said they had:

https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/help-my-posts-have-disappeared?replies=59#post-1418269 – (Reported traffic spike from Pakistan.)
Obviously this could be utterly benign. It might just be a bot of some kind getting frustrated that it couldn’t index the posts properly while Redoable Lite was down. And while I can’t speak for anyone else, traffic has returned to normal on my site since Redoable Lite was fixed, so it may all just be academic. But it was odd enough that I thought it worth reporting.

I had unusually high traffic yesterday, but this was views and not visitors. I have theorized that it was people searching for a post that they could see.
