About ads and their relationship with site privacy

    Hello all,

We have put our website on air for a while, and so far we have set the privacy to Public but with the option “Discourage search engines from indexing this site. This option does not block access to your site — it is up to search engines to honor your request.” since we had still been working setting some features. We could check the website from its URL and no ads are visible except for the WordPress small top bar and footer message.

Nevertheless, if we uncheck the option “Discourage search engines from indexing this site,” we noticed that non-wordpress ads appear in “post” pages (after the content) or in the footer widgets, such as jetpack ads, besides footer pop-ups.

I have looked in help pages and guides, and also in forum, but I could not find any reference to such situations for ads appearing when the option mentioned above is unchecked. Is it related to the choosen theme? Is there any configuration we have missed out?

Looking forward to hear from you and BR

    Hi there,

I see one site on your account on the Free plan. On sites on the Free plan, we do show ads to help pay the bills.

    https://wordpress.com/support/no-ads/

If you upgrade to one of our plans, such as the Personal Plan, ads will not be displayed on your site, and in addition, you get additional storage space, and we will cover the cost of a custom domain name for the first year as part of the initial plan purchase. After the first year, the domain will renew separately from the plan. You can see a quick comparison of our plans here, and if you scroll down on that page, there is a compare button to click to see a bit more detail on the plans.

    Dear thesacredpath

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, the site I have linked to my account is on the Free Plan. I am aware that ADs may be shown “to pay the bills.” Nevertheless, my question is still unanswered.

Actually I do not see ads in the website if the privacy has the feature “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” checked. If this option is not checked, the ads are present. What I want to confirm is if there is any correlation between having no ads and have no search engines index, since I have found no information about it anywhere in the WP.com pages.

Our ad networks use search engine data among other factors to determine ad placement and content on your site. While you may see a reduction of ads by having “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” selected, it won’t remove them entirely.

    I hope that clarifies things!

    Hello staff-heroponriki,

    Thanks for reaching us out.

While you may see a reduction of ads by having “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” selected, it won’t remove them entirely.

Not sure about that. As this option is checked, no ads appear at all.
Just to be more deep on it, only WP related one, such as a top banner and so on, have appeared, but third parties ads are not to be seen anywhere (thanks god) as long this option is checked.

Our ad networks use search engine data among other factors to determine ad placement and content on your site.

My point is if that this kind of effect is not clarified anywhere in WP.com support pages… Just to exemplify, if I turn the option off for some minutes, third-party ads start to blow everywhere. However, if I turn it on right way the ads disappear.

    BR
