    So I recently purchased a domain from yahoo.com (for $9.95) and mapped it to wordpress.com by changing the name servers. Then I made it so that the URL of my blog would just be the name of the domain that I purchased from yahoo (for $10). This was all done a day or two ago. Then I came across the notice about not being able to use adsense in a wordpress.com blog. So I have a few questions:

    1. Since I purchased the domain from yahoo, does this mean that my blog is not considered a “wordpress.com” blog and therefore, I can use adsense in this blog?

    2. If the answer for #1 is NO, can I undo anything I’ve done in the past few days so that I can get a wordpress-like blog and use adsense at the same time? I understand I may have to go through http://www.wordsense.org, but I don’t even know where to begin…

    I would appreciate any helpful feedback. Thanks!

    #1 – Having a domain does not negate the fact that WordPress.com is your free host and the ToS still apply. The FAQ entry on domain mapping states that. So, no, you can’t have adsense.

    #2 – You can hire a host and then repoint your domain. (again) A good place to begin is right at http://wordpress.org which has information on hosts and everything else you’ll need to know.

    Sorry this wasn’t the answer your were hoping for.

    I’m sure it’s around here somewhere, but could someone please point me to the explanation for why ads aren’t permitted? I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation, but I can’t find it.

    It was in the first reply above by the way.

    With all due respect, that FAQ does not answer my question. I asked what the reasoning was; that FAQ entry lists all the ads that are not permitted and does not explain why this is so.

    The FAQ entry does state that “We have a very low tolerance for blogs created purely for search engine optimization or commercial purposes, machine-generated blogs, and will continue to nuke them, so if that’s what you’re interested in WordPress.com is not for you.” However, this isn’t really the answer I’m looking for, unless WordPress is assuming that every website that has Adsense was created “purely for search engine optimization or commercial purposes,” etc.

    Thanks for the response ellaella.

    So, anyone, how can I remap my web site that currently belongs to wordpress.com over to wordpress.org?

    @Is998
    You don’t want to map your domain here as it will not allow you any more freedom as your blog would still be here. You need to register your own domain name, get a web host, install the software from wordpress.org and then export all your posts, pages, and such out of your .com blog and into the new one. There is no way to automatic way to redirect people who come your blog here to your new blog. You can keep the blog here with a final, single post directing people to your new blog. There is a list of some hosts over at wordpress.org that work well with the wordpress.org software.

    @frothy.
    This is what is available on the subject of ads and advertising:

    In the wordpress blog, see Matt’s post On Ads.

    In addition, the last paragraph of the WordPress.com features page says this:

    Advertising
    To support the service we may occasionally show Google text ads on your blog, however we do this very rarely. In the future you’ll be able to purchase an upgrade to either turn the ads off or show your own ads and make money from your blog.

    Thanks for your response sacredpath. The thing is, I already mapped my domain to wordpress.com days ago after I purchased my domain from yahoo.com. So what I just did was I changed the name servers on my domain so that the domain belongs to yahoo again.
    So now, I’m looking at the http://www.wordpress.org and am trying to locate a web host to use (they recommend a few on their site) that will allow me to blog in peace while posting ads.
    Any recomendations?

    I’m only familiar with the one I’m using, http://www.asmallorange.com/ , but I’ve been quite happy with their service and support. Watch out for the really cheap ones, you get what you pay for.

    I’m curious to know what that purchased upgrade would entail regarding the ads. The snippet you’ve provided (which I have seen before) indicates that the user would be able to make money from the ads (with an upgrade), but it doesn’t note whether WordPress would as well. (It’s probably far too early for that information to even exist, of course.)

    It does seem that the reason ads aren’t permitted is that a great number of the users said they preferred it that way. Can’t argue with that logic.

    The only upgrade that allows ads currently is the VIP upgrade, which costs several hundred dollars to set up, and several hundred per month. Don’t hold your breath waiting for the ad upgrade; it’s vapourware as far as we know.
