About Analytics…
-
Hey everyone. Please forgive me as I have extremely limited knowledge about CSS. I am trying to used Google Analytics with my website. I tried to figure out how to use plugins, to no avail. I couldn’t find any sort of step by step guide that was simple enough for me to use and get started. So, I purchased the customization feature for my theme (Vigilance) and am trying to put the Analytics code in the footer, as suggested by this tutorial: http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-install-google-analytics-in-wordpress/. However, my analytics report shows that the status is still “Tracking Unknown.”
I know that this is probably a ridiculously basic issue, but I would so appreciate any advice anyone can offer. I’d love to learn more about web design but I don’t even know where to start. This one thing would be great to figure out, though.
Thanks for your time. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Google analytics cannot be used here. The code it is written in is not allowed for security reasons. See the second to the last paragraph in the Stats support document.
Secondly CSS cannot be used to add functionality. CSS is simply a set of instructions for the browser so that it can style and position the different elements of a page.

You can’t use Google Analytics on a WordPress.COM blog – period end – upgrade or not.
There are several other several plain text counters that can be used, see http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/ for some of them Quantcast is built in http://www.quantcast.com/redspeaks.wordpress.com

BTW, the tutorial you reference is for wordpress sites that are self-hosted on third-partly web hosts such as godaddy, bluehost, etc., using the software from wordpress.ORG. See here for the differences between wordpress.com and wordpress.org.

Thank you both. I registered “www.demianter.com” with GoDaddy, but it redirects to my wordpress.com site. I have read the differences between wordpress.com and .org before, but I am not sure how to use the wordpress software with the third-party domain. If you know of a site or page in WP support that explains that in layman’s terms, please pass it on. Thanks again.

Try this for $ 12.00 US / year
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
PS – you will then need to go back to Quantcast and ask them to add your new mapped domain to the Stats (at least I did) – if you want to use the Quantcast Stats

What you would have to do is (if you do not currently have one) is get a hosting account with godaddy and then install the software from wordpress.ORG into that account. They have install scripts available in the cPanel that make this quite easy and all you do is answer a few question (and make sure and write down all the information it will give you during the installation). You would then also set the DNS records on your domain name to point back at godaddy. They will provide that information.
At that point, you will not be connected to wordpress.com at all and you can do anything you wish with that blog, hacking the theme files or whatever to your heart’s content.
I would suggest getting one of the analytic plugins for GA since that means that you don’t have to worry about continuously re-hacking the theme if you change themes or update the theme to a newer version later.

If you don’t want to have your blog here on WordPress.COM pay no attention to my above reply.

I am in the process of switching over from Blogger to WordPress for my blog. The lack of access to Google Analytics is completely making me regret this decision and likely reverse it. It is such an awesome tool! Too bad.

@reginayesnetwork – there are several plain html counters and trackers that work here, I use Clustermaps, Flag counter and Site Meter – there are several others that work also.
