about archiving
-
Hello, I am kind of new to blogging. I usually write 1 article per week sometimes more. My question is, how do I remove an article from the front page (home) but keep it available in the category and in the archive?
Thus being able to control which articles I want on the home page. Is this possible?

– >dashboard -> options -> reading options
(1) Here you make your choices for front page displays and posts page displays using the drop down boxes.
(2) Next sroll down to blog pages and set the number of posts you want to be displayed on the front page that you have chosen.
(3) Lastly, don’t forget to click “udpdate options” when your are done.

absolutely wonderful. I never saw those sub options before. I thought there were too few options. I think more options would still be nice tho. :-) It seems to me that # of posts you choose to display is for all pages and not just the front page. Not the best, but it will do.
Thanks a bunch.

-> Presentation -> Widgets
You simply drag your Archive widget out of the Available Widgets box and drop it into the Sidebar box and click “Save Changes”. Data in sidebars is cached so it may take a bit of time for the Archives widget to update. -
in terms of archiving i have 24 pages available on my blog – i would like to archive 20 of them so that when arriving at the page — only those 4 pages are visible under the pages tabs – but the rest would be visible when the archives are visited.
right now i see all of them and when i go to the archives i do not see any of the pages…

Are we really talking about the same thing? There are differences between posts and static Pages http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/11/a-post-and-a-page/
Pages are not kept in archives – only posts are.
-
in presentation – i click widgets – then do i drag it to the now empty box which tells me it it replacing my sidebar? if so what does this mean? i am afraid i will loose all my postings and pages now.
-
Posts are automatically archived on a monthly basis and static pages are not. If you truly have 24 static Pages then these links will be useful to you
http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/07/01/i-have-too-many-pages-at-the-top-of-my-blog/ -
(1) May I suggest that you stop everything please and post the link to your blog before you do anything else?
(2) May I also suggest that you read the information at the links I provided so you clearly understand the differences between posts and static pages before we proceed?
(3) No data is lost when one moves widgets. Every theme has a “default” widget arrangement. When we move a widget we override that default arrangement and replace it with an arrangement of our own making. The data is never lost.

directing.wordpress.com is the link
i feel i understand the difference between posts and pages
i have dragged the widget marked archive which now appears.
i would like to archive the pages now and mark them 2007 so all pages and posts are new in 2008
-
There is no way to archive pages aside from manually copying and pasting them into a file and keeping them on your own computer. All pages and posts are give a date and timestamp when they are published.
-
ahh – can i then copy the pages (with all their attached videos) and move/ paste them to another blog on the site – a new “archive blog”
i am just trying to “clean up” the site but not lose the pages for reference…
-

If you prefer you can export the contents of your blog into an xml file for backup purposes. However, doing so will only make a copy. If you want the contents to “disappear” from the blog after you back them up then you must manually dlete them one at a time.
Frankly, I find it hard to feature what you are talking about. You don’t sound like you are using your blog in a customary manner at all. Please post the url for your blog so I can see what the situation is.

directing.wordpress.com
and i am using the site in an unusual but very effective way. i am using it as a 24/7 classroom – so each semester i want to start new but keep the old pages as well.
each student gets his/her own page and posts all their work – comments attached etc….

As yours is a “private” blog and I can’t see it anyway. But, I really cannot offer you any more help than I have already offered.
-
thanks. fyi – when i change the page status to private – it more or less accomplishes what i need to do – then i can republish when i need to.
