About blogging on WP with a different hosting service

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi! This question has been long coming …

I created a blog in WP in 2015, then several years later transferred the blog to a different hosting service.

I am sometimes confused with WP regarding the following:

-Can I bring back to WP the new transferred blog that is hosted by another provider, it is also a website now with some of my products and affiliate links – the transferred site is done in WP format in the new hosting (Cloudaccess)
-Which plan should I purchase in the above case, or do I need a paid plan?
-I still have my free WordPress site active however I always use my transferred site with any updates I do
-Blogging and posts are still an essential part of my website but
-My subscriber plugin stopped working once I transferred my site to another host – which plugin do you recommend for subscribers, or do you recommend a funnel from Clickfunnels?

Ha, I know these questions may be stupid, but please bring me some clarity :)

    Yours,
    Tommi

  • Hi there,

I created a blog in WP in 2015, then several years later transferred the blog to a different hosting service.

Nice, I can see on our end that you have had an account with us for some time, good to have you stop by again! If you feel comfortable sharing the URL of the site in question, it will help us answer as accurately as possible if we can take a look at your current site. For now I’ll take your queries one at a time, thanks!

Can I bring back to WP the new transferred blog that is hosted by another provider, it is also a website now with some of my products and affiliate links – the transferred site is done in WP format in the new hosting (Cloudaccess)

Which plan should I purchase in the above case, or do I need a paid plan?

Even on free WordPress.com sites it is possible to import content from another WordPress site since the two types of WordPress are still similar under the hood. You can follow the steps here to import your pages, blog posts, comments, uploaded media, etc: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-a-sites-content/

It is possible that will be all you need, but it will help to take a closer look at your site to confirm.

If you have a more complicated site, one with a lot of plugins, a 3rd party theme with design customizations, or where you want to migrate an exact copy of your current WordPress site, this is possible under our Business and eCommerce plans. That would allow you to use our cloud importer to migrate your site exactly as it is. This takes just a few clicks and is otherwise automated.

-I still have my free WordPress site active however I always use my transferred site with any updates I do -Blogging and posts are still an essential part of my website but
-My subscriber plugin stopped working once I transferred my site to another host
    – which plugin do you recommend for subscribers, or do you recommend a funnel from Clickfunnels?

I see your free site but it appears you have not blogged on it since 2019, and it sounds like you are not planning on reviving it. In that event you can start a new site by following the steps here, which will create your initial (empty) WordPress.com site. From there you can fill that empty site with content using the import options mentioned above.

If your subscriptions on the self-hosted site are managed via Jetpack, we would be able to import that regardless of upgrade. If the site uses a 3rd party plugin to manage those it sounds like we would need more info to be sure. You may be able to import the subscriptions, or it may make more sense to set up your site under the Business Plan, which would allow you to use all the plugins and customizations you use now.

Ha, I know these questions may be stupid, but please bring me some clarity

Nothing to worry about there, we’re happy to answer any questions you have about our managed hosting. Thanks!

    Hi there, Staff!

Many thanks for your answer, here comes the URL: https://verumxplorer.com/. This is the one above I have been updating the graphics with. It is the one I intend to use for promoting some products I use myself, blogging also. Thanks a lot I will also still look into your answer. Am still checking which plan would work best in the beginning….

No new posts indeed, but lots of material to come. Once I start would like to ensure subscriptions work.

Indeed Subscriptions are with Jetpack however it does not update the number of subscriptions on the URL: https://verumxplorer.com/

Thanks for your feedback, could you please check which plan works out with importing the site https://verumxplorer.com/ with its subscribers.

    Thanks in advance!

    Tommi

  • Thanks for that! Regarding subscribers, I see 354 here and there; is that correct?

Otherwise, I took a quick look at the site and can see it runs on Twenty Seventeen, which we have here for you already. And it looks like you probably have a number of plugins, though we may well have similar features built into our service.

You’ve got a couple of paths you can take with that, depending on how important the outside plugins are to you:

    • Use the Business Plan and import the entire site, plugins and all. Sometimes there’s a little fine-tuning needed after import, but it should be minimal, and then you can make the new site live.
    • Use the Premium Plan with the Content Only import, use the Twenty Seventeen theme, and then reconfigure features like SEO and sharing using our tools before making the site go live here.

Either way, once you’ve got it set up here we can ensure your Jetpack Stats and subscribers are properly ported over. And, you’ll have our services, including spam filtering and support.

Let us know what other questions you have & we’ll be happy to help you get situated!

Hi again, and thanks for your answer.

Assuming I would like to import my self-hosted site to WP and:

-Sell my courses, and pdf:s in order for the site to collect payments directly (cart, checkout). Do I use a payment funnel from you (WP)?

-Add subscribers to my private community

-Add a couple of other languages that can be switched upon preference

IS this Business or Ecommerce plan? I will not be selling any physical products.

    Thanks again!

    Tommi

In a nutshell, except for the above my aim is to reach the WP community with my blog content, sell my courses and have an exclusive subscriber community.

With the kind of website format that I have on https://verumxplorer.com/ right now

Question: Will my current host (Cloudaccess) remain as host off-WordPress, and will they function as my host after I have imported in on WP or what happens ? And will my URL remain https://verumxplorer.com/ ?

Should I do sales pages, squeeze pages, video sales pages with for example Kartra. Then let people reach those Kartra sales pages using my WordPress

OR does WP have all these kind of sales pages, squeeze pages, video sales pages available?

Sorry about all the questions, but just to understand how well equipped WP is regarding the above?

  • The main difference between the Business and eCommerce plans is that the eCommerce plan installs WooCommerce for you and sets you up with several premium eCommerce plugins. If you’re not selling physical products, that may be unnecessary.

So if you already have the plugins you need to make your site run exactly as you’d like, the Business Plan would work nicely for you. It would support a Karta plugin, too, if you want to use that.

Or if you want to use built-in features, the Premium and Personal plans do accept Stripe Payments, and allow you to set up premium, members-only content. We have a how-to here. You can also have a free newsletter on the site if you’d like, and you can set up squeeze pages for your options if you’d like.

I’d recommend starting a new site here:

    https://wordpress.com/start

Choose the Premium option, since that will give you chat-based support. Then you can ask about the features you need in real-time to decide whether you want to upgrade again to Business to import everything, or whether Premium or Personal with a content-only import will work best for you.

Thank you very much! This will be enough for me to proceed …

    Regards,

    Tommi

  • Cheers, Tommi! We’ll be glad to have you back, and glad to have your back re: our security and support. Let us know if you need any help getting things imported.
