Mark specifically said we’re allowed to make fun of spammers. Besides, all those threads get deleted anyway.

I don’t mind making fun of the spammers. Heck I do it. It’s when some folks around here start taking it upon themselves to police the forums on issues with the spammers and other users is what I have an issue with.

Might it be more effective to send them an email? You know how it is with a general announcement: the person you’re directing it at never thinks they need to hear it.

Nosy – any thread on the forum that you think is inappropriate, spam, rude, demeaning or similar you can add a tag. The tag is “modlook”. Mark and DrMike both keep an eye on the RSS feed for Modlook and can pop in and deal with the issue.
You add the modlook tag at the top of the thread. If you see it’s already there then you can just move on and not worry further about it. :)

I haven’t been around much lately due to work, but I always keep track of the ‘modlook’ tag on the road if nothing else, so everyone is encouraged to use it ;)

If you have an issue with a poster, a thread, etc, mark it as ‘modlook’
And then move on.
Sure, fine. Make fun of the spammers. Whatever.
Don’t worry about typos.
Don’t worry if they post in the wrong subforum.
Don’t worry if they swear.
Don’t worry if they link to an offsite place. (Feel free to point out that it may be not safe for work though.)
Don’t worry if they’re rude. (We’re going to touch on that one shortly.)
Don’t worry if they’re predicting the rise of the all mighty dark lord of New Jersey.
It’s not anyone elses place here in the forums to be policing them except for the moderators or the automattic employees.
If you’ve beed called “the forum police” in the past, there may be a reason for it.
Don’t frigging worry about it.
And, yes, that will be on the test. :)

Because the only harm that was done in that thread was done by yourself. I gave the blogger the correct answer of what to do in my first post.

why bother having sub forums if we’re not going to tell people what should be posted where? why is CSS the only feature to have its own forum?
if it’s there because you and mark aren’t going to help out there, then damn straight i’m going to tell people not to post about how the latest sponsored widget won’t work in there.

If you modlook a post and say it needs a different forum I’ll happily move it.
The CSS has it’s own forum because it’s a distinct issue which people will want repeated help. It makes sense to have the information concentrated in one place. It’s also the case that you can get per-forum feeds so that might be useful to some.
Nothing else jumps out as needing a forum of it’s own – is there one?As for helping with CSS, at one point I knew stuff. Now I know very little, so bar hiding footer text I don’t think I’m best placed to answer.

if you don’t ever tell anyone that they’re not supposed to put their widget requests in the CSS forum, how are they ever going to know? i’m all for telling them nicely, but let’s not make them guess.
CSS is less distinct now that it breaks the custom headers. I think widgets are more distinct, and probably just as deserving of their own forums. Domain Mapping questions are distinct as well, but i’m not sure how much of that stuff can really be answered by anyone other than mark.
