About 'insert an image via URL'
-
Hi,
I got a problem when I insert an image via URL.
And Here it is:
In the new version editor (in: …/post/…), I cannot just insert an image via URL in the Visual mode. Instead, I have to switch to HTML mode, and add ‘<img src=”URL” />’ in the code. Details are in my post (https://rexlyc.wordpress.com/2016/07/16/insert-an-image-from-google-photos-to-wordpress/)
However, when I use the old editor (in: …/wp-admin/post-…), I CAN successfully insert an image via URL. So, what’s wrong? Is that a bug? Thanks.

It might be that the image via URL system is checking to see if the URL looks like an image (i.e. somewhere.com/myphoto1.jpg) and the URL you get from Google Photos doesn’t have an image extension. Can you try with another image that has an image extension and see if that works for you?

Hi, hallluke
I just tried to insert an image from imgur.com with a “.jpg” end in the URL. And, yeah, that indeed works for me! Thank you!
But I’m still curious about why the old version editor can recognize my URL from Google Photos but the new one cannot. :P -
Thanks for checking! I’ll flag this thread for staff to take a look and then they can report it to the dev team if they think it needs to be fixed. In the meantime you should still be able to right click and save images locally and then upload them to your media library. You can subscribe to the topic (link in the sidebar on the right) if you want to be notified by email of any follow-up posts.

Hi, hallluke
Thank you so much!!
BTW, I know how to upload the file to my media library but I only have 3 GB space in my free plan. lol. So I have to make good use of my limited space. :P -
Have a look at the image optimisation support page if you’re getting close to the upload limit. There’s a few good tips there on how to make sure your files take up as little space as possible without sacrificing quality. It might be worth running images you get from the web through some editing software to make sure they’re not unnecessarily large (in dimensions and file size) before you upload them.

Hi there,
Thanks for reporting this, and for the detailed explanation in your post. I’ve filed a bug report for this, so that our developers know it needs to be fixed.
I can recommend another good article on image optimisation, here:
If you follow those tips you can make your free storage last many years.

If you are active on GitHub, I reported it here:
https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/6853
You’re also welcome to report issues with the new editor there yourself should you want to, but it’s fine if you prefer to report them in the forums as well.
