About Links and Category Archive Display

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’ve got some more questions about my new blog: http://gfboards.wordpress.com/.

    1. Is there a way to change the order of the links and link categories?
    2. Is there a way to have a category archive ONLY list the post TITLES, not the content. I’m going to be posting gaming reviews and it’s annoying to have to scroll past each gaming review to get to the next one. What I need is an index of the gaming reviews in alphabetical order.

    Thanks,

    (1) All wordpress.com blogs have only one Blogroll located in the Admin area where you enter all links and assign each link to one or more Categories.

    The links you enter into your Blogroll are displayed only after the Links widget is placed in your sidebar. Also note that there must be at least one link assigned to a Category before it will appear in your sidebar.

    Likewise, the Category widget must be placed in the sidebar for posts to display. And just like links when it comes to posts there must be at least one published post in a Category before the Category will be displayed in your sidebar.

    Once your Links widget and Categories widget are positioned in your sidebar, the manner in which the links you entered into your Blogroll will be displayed is alphabetically in accord with the Categories you created and assigned to those links when you entered them into your Blogroll.

    Therefore as you will have multiple Categories it may look like you have multiple Blogrolls when you view your links in your sidebar. But in truth, you only have only one Blogroll, which is displays links as separate alphabetically ordered groups, in accord with the Categories that you assigned to those links when you entered them into your Blogroll.

    * Also note that the foregoing does not apply to the Blix theme which is hard-coded to display all links in one alphabetically organized row.

    There’s a work around if you do not want “aphabetical display” and provided you are not talking about the Blix theme. You can use a numerical value before the word to change alphabetical order of Category display.

    Example 1:
    Apples
    Bananas
    Cherries

    Example 1 work-around

    1 Cherries
    2 Apples
    3 Bananas

    (2) The way the Archives are displayed in any theme is the way that the designer coded them to in the underlying template. We cannot access or edit our underlying theme templates on this wp-MU multi-user blogging platform at wordpress.com. If you could then every change you made would likewise effect every other blog with the same theme.

    The only way you can get an index page of all post titles in alphabetical order is to create a Page and construct one manually.

    Only one page in a blog is dynamic and will automatically update with every new post you make. All other pages are static and sit outside the blog structure. They do not automatically update and they cannot be assigned categories. You must “edit” each static page to manually update it.

    I looked at your blog and would like to make a suggestion. If you intend to have large images (or video embeds) in almost every post then to reduce the page loading time you will have to reduce the number of posts that appear on your front page.
    This can be done here
    -> Options -> Reading
    Blog Pages
    Show at most: ____ posts
    Don’t forget to click “Update Changes” to save.

    Another way to reduce page loading time is to turn off Snap Previews.
    -> Presentation -> Extras
    (uncheck the checkbox and click “update Extras” to save).

    Okay thanks guys. It’s a pitty there isn’t an option to create an automatically updated index or order links…

    It’s a blog, not a cms. And if you use the numerical work around on your Categories you will change the order of your links.

    If you are a guru you can spoof the blogroll order by adding a space before the link. Or two.

    @atthe404
    Well on some some themes injecting 1 space, 2,3, etc. prior to the link works and on others it doesn’t. That’s why I didn’t bring it up. ;)

    @fatsheep
    If you want to give what atthe404 suggests a go then the process is described in this FAQs on sorting pages http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/can-i-sort-my-pages/
