Are the theme’s it shows the only available theme? Or can we edit them freely and easily? I want to be able to have a dark background, with a side bar thats a dark gray, and a big enough banner. The only one close to that is the newest one, but the banner is tiny and get’s cut in two ¬_¬
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We cannot edit the underlying theme files here at wordpress.COM, but if you have CSS editing experience, what you want to do can be done with the paid CSS upgrade.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/editing-css/I would suggest taking a look at Modularity Lite. It has a 950px x 200px header image and also has a home page slide show feature, and you can change the background color from right within the dashboard.

Also, use the theme feature filter (to the right of the search box at appearance > themes) and search for custom header and custom background.

On WordPress.com, the only blogs we can use are under Appearance —> Themes.
You can use the features filter there to look for a theme with a custom background, or a custom header. If you have experience with CSS, and a good working knowledge of how to use it, then you can purchase a yearly upgrade to change the appearance of one of the available themes.
There is no official support for using CSS (only a few very nice volunteers stop in when time allows to assist), so don’t purchase this upgrade until you know how to use it. You can experiment with it for free, though you won’t be able to publish your changes.
