Once the DNS points at wordpress.com, those emails will cease to function. You have two options.

You can keep your emails by using google apps for webmasters as explained in this support document.

You can instead of mapping the main domain, map a subdomain to your blog here such as blog.mydomain.com.

is there no way to keep the current emails with my current host and change the dns?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, by setting up with Google Apps for Webmasters. You will keep the same email address(es) but Google will intercept them for you. Your “to” and “from” will still reflect your current email address(es).

so does this mean i cancel my email hosting with internode and set them up with with Google Apps for Webmasters?

No, the email addresses will quit working on their own when you map the domain to wordpress.com. It will take a few hours to as much as 24 for the mapping and DNS change to propagate around the internet and I don’ t think you can start the email thing till after that settles down. The the google apps email thing can take up to 48 hours to verify the site and such before you will be able to start using the email addresses again.

There really isn’t anyway around that other than going the subdomain route. Mapping a subdomain would allow you to keep your email addresses right where they are and there would be no interruption.

I have domain mapping here and use my old Host for the email. I needed to add an A & MX record, that information needed to come from my old host, then things did not work and I needed to get the information translated to the right format by a Happiness Engineer. A note I have a Static IP address and some of the formats I have seen in the Forum is way different than mine.

    A mail 255.255.255.255
    MX 10 mail.my-domain.com.

Note the full stop character (period) after the domain name. These need to be exactly done correctly or they won’t work – this was important enough to me that I mapped a test site to get the bugs out before moving and mapping my main site.

    auxclass
did you change the dns and then you went in and customized it and put
    A mail 255.255.255.255
    MX 10 mail.my-domain.com.

It was 10 months ago – if I remember correctly I did the domain mapping (can’t change anything until it is active) – then a few minutes later put in the records above with my actual site info – but I did not wait for anything – there was no waiting – just put the info in –

Sorry I can’t remember if there was much of a disruption – but if email comes back most people will resend a bit later or check the site and resend –

    ive been told
As long as you keep your domains MX records pointing to ipmailmx.internode.on.net there will not be any disruptions with your domains mail flow
now is there a special way to type this in?

There is a place to enter the new information – Dashboard >> Store >> Domains >> then there is a “Edit DNS” option – the records are changed there.

the tough part is getting the format of the MX and any other records correct – your email host should be able to help you with the correct information – if you have not done this before you could then ask one of the Happiness Engineers to look at the format of the records – I had to get a bit of help when I moved over and I just looked for the old email to see what the difference was between what my host sent me and what I posted above but was not able to find that email nor the old records that did not work.

I just bought my domain name this morning & set up the email thru Google apps. They did have the steps in Google to follow – you have to get part of that started before doing the switch with your other provider. I didn’t have a domain or email before, so my process was a little different than what you will have to do. Mine actually started working right away this morning & I was able to send & receive some test emails.
