about wordpress usage

  Hi , i have uploaded a manualy created website to my server.
  and i want to install wordpress to my cpanel to edit the content of my existing website.
  but when i install wordpress , my existing website is getting turned off and the welcome page of the wordpress is appearing when i type my url of my website.
  i want to know whether can i just edit online content without getting that wordpress stuffs or not ?
  if yes , how ?
