Abundance of Spam Comments
-
I’ve been getting a lot of spam comments, especially today (I’ve deleted at least 6 or 7). I have purchased Akismet through your WordPress services offered and am puzzled as to why so many are making there way through. Even though I have comments set up to be moderated, it is disturbing to have so many hitting my email. What can I do to lessen the onslaught of spam comments to my blog site? — Robin

Hi Robin,
Akismet is actually a free service which we provide with all WordPress.com blogs. As for why some spam is getting through, I’m very sorry for that! Similar to any email service, our anti-spam services does what it can to catch any and all spam; but spammers are constantly changing how they do things in order to get past our defenses. We adjust to catch it, but we need the help from folks like you to who catch it in your inbox. If you could keep pressing the “Spam” link so that our system has the opportunity to update itself, we can try and ensure as little spam gets in to your inbox as possible!
Thanks in advance.

I was surprised when I was asked about purchasing Akismet when I was changing up my Theme and services. I had thought it was a free service, but ended up paying for it. Do you think it was some sort of pop-up scam and that that is what’s causing the spam comments to seep through? It probably isn’t. I was probably tired and gullible at the time it popped-up and wasn’t thinking clearly. Anyway, I’ll continue to do my part by pressing the SPAM button on them.
Thank you! -

If you can let me know if this was legit, or if I need to cancel (before it expires next August), or if there is something WordPress can do via your customer service to cancel it and have Akismet refund my money — since you DO offer it with your theme package — I’d really appreciate it.

Hi Robin,
It’s definitely not fake or anything. It’s just an offer for users who either want to support the Akismet project or who have a self-hosted WordPress.org site. I am personally not able to refund Akismet purchases, but I have sent something over to them asking them to take a look at it, and as soon as they give me any information I will let you know!
Also, as a side note, this forum is semi-public, so I would definitely not include the last 4 digits of your credit card or any account numbers in any communications like this. I’ve gone ahead and removed them, but just for future reference! :)

Okay, thank you! {And here I thought we were having this private little conversation as if we were in my living room chatting over coffee.}

Ha! I know, it’s easy to seem that way, but no. It shows up in our Forums under “Staff Answers.” It’s a way for folks to get answers to common questions.

OK, you’re all set! The Akismet account has been cancelled and the $36 which you paid has been refunded back to your account. Depending in your bank and its policies, it should show up in the next few days to few weeks.
Let me know if there’s anything else you need!

You ROCK! Thank you SO much.
I knew our little chat over virtual coffee would prove an awesome experience.
You’re a techy-support GEM!
