Abusive comments in foreign language

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

( I already tried to post this I can’t see it on the queue of messages, so sorry if this is a duplicate)

I’m being harassed and receiving abusive messages from I think a Spanish blogger. One of the words looked like the “B” word.

    goyovigil50 dot com

I politely sent them the link for

    es.support.wordpress.com/siguiendo/

And have said nothing else to them – but not sure they knows how to unfollow a blog.

No harm done, I will just ignore/delete the messages – But, please could you ensure their blog unfollows mine.

    (I already unfollowed their blog.)

    Thanks

    Don

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Don, sorry to hear they’ve been bothering you.

You can remove followers on your own like so:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/followers/#how-to-remove-a-follower

And if you’d like to hold a comment or even delete it automatically if it includes certain words, you can do that too:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation

Let us know if you need more help!

    Hi supermovia,

Of course, no worries, I’ve been doing the blog since 2013, and seen plenty of BS posted, so it’s no trouble – WordPress is usually a lot friendlier than other social media platforms.

The links are useful I didn’t know the page existed, so thanks for sharing them with me.

Only trouble is I have more than 38000 followers (824 pages of followers in my wp-admin), and there doesn’t seem to be a search facility on the page you suggested. I tried scrolling down the page endlessly, and then use the search function of the browser, but am unable to locate either of the blogs I requested to be detatched from my blog.

So with this in mind, can you do this for me manually from the two other blogs’ backend :

    goyovigil50 dot com
    becois dot wordpress dot com

and since I raised the issue there’s been a third abusive/offensive blogger (these things do seem to come in threes) :

    houseofheartweb dot wordpress dot com

I worry about inexperienced bloggers who may have lost their password, or not know how to use WordPress.

I’ve already adjusted settings to manual approval of every comment and added the above blogs to my blocklist (in discussion settings)

    Many thanks in advance

    Cheers

    Don

That didn’t work either, so I’ll try again.

The abuse in foreign language is getting worse. Please can you access the backend of the above blogs and have them unfollow me.

    The most urgent is :

    goyovigil50

[no need to include their comment here]

PS, I was unable to add any links (took me about 30 attempts to make each post here), is my account crippled in some way ?

  • Hi Don, would you be willing to send the usernames associated with the comments, instead of the websites? Thanks in advance. If the websites are spammy or abusive, the forum might be hiding those comments.

  • Oh noting too, you could also send the email addresses associated with the comments. If you type them as regular email addresses (no spaces, etc.) they would be hidden from public view so only staff can access them.

    I’ve checked in :

wordpress dot com oblique read oblique blogs oblique 17134356

And according to that, I’m not following their blog.

I also searched my email followers and couldn’t find their email address there – so seems they are probably not an email follower.

the latest message sent from the Spanish speaking person was :
    [redacted, not needed here]

    the email stated is :

(email visible only to moderators and staff) [note this says redacted but staff can see it and this is all we need]

I would like to stress, that we don’t know the person’s personal circumstances (eg bereavement etc). So would suggest taking it easy on them. We all sometimes have difficult times in our lives. But, anyway, I’m sure you guys know how to deal with it.

I haven’t heard further from the other two blogs mentioned in first email, so hopefully I’ve heard the last from them. Would be helpful if you could access WP backend and make sure they aren’t following me.

    Thanks for your help.

    Cheers

    Don

I tried to send you all the details, used “dot” and “oblique” instead of the characters and included email address (included email just as you requested), and it failed.

I do apologise, but I don’t have time to be guessing at why the forum doesn’t like my message, resubmitting 30 times (and it’s 5.43am here now, and I already spent a hour or so gathering all the details). Makes sense for preventing spam, but does make it challenging to communicate in genuine case when it’s not spam.

So please can we take this over to email, please send me an email at my registered address – I’ve saved all the details in a notepad file ready to email to you.

    Thanks for your help

    Regards

    Don

  • Ah, I see the messages now. They were marked as spam. We’ll work on this for you.

  • I removed them as a follower. Going forward:

    – Do not try to make 30 comments here with the same message in them, or start tons of threads with those comments. That will cripple your account. They were being marked as spam.

    – Do not quote the user. We don’t need that to find their comment.

    – Do not include a link to their site. We don’t need that to find their comment either.

    – Do include just the username, which was in this case “goyovigil50” — that is all we need, or their email address.

    – Do consider putting the curse phrases in your blacklist. “p*** madre” for example, but with the unta part too.

    – Please understand too that while it is possible for your (or us) to remove a follower, it is not possible to block them from viewing your site, unless you make the site private. They could refollow. They could use a different tool to follow. They could create a different account.

That’s why I recommend using the blacklist for offensive words instead. Just be sure you put in enough of a word (or the spaces around it) that you won’t accidentally delete legitimate comments.

Hoping this helps. I’ll work on taking your threads and comments out of spam then throwing them away so you won’t be tainted as a spammer :) Thanks!

Yes, it does help very much – Thanks for all your help and advice, that’s much appreciated.

I try not to post support thread unless it’s something I *really* can’t deal with on my own. I know you guys are supporting probably millions of blogs, and have worked in support myself, so know the day-to-day BS you have to deal with.

I found the blacklist, I’ve listed their blogname, email and ip address.

And, yes I fully understand it’s a public facing blog.

One feature request if you have the power to ask for, is a search facility on the page for detaching blogs from one’s own – that way I could have searched the list on my own and saved some work for support staff. (There’s already a search facility for detaching email followers on the same page)

Thanks once again. Have a great day.

    Don

I have tried emailing this person (at their registered address) who wants to be detached from my blog :

    becois
    becois dot wordpress dot com
(email visible only to moderators and staff)

    They keep emailing me.

Please can you detatch them from my blog

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi there,

I have removed them as a follower of your site. Also, yes, especially with the amount of followers you have, a search feature on the follower page would be great. There is one on the email followers page, but not the followers page. I will submit a feature request for this and will keep you updated if it is added by our developers.

    Thanks,
