Access control WorldPress hosted site

    I would like to be able to limit access to certain pages, where there is confidential information. There are plugins for that, such as .htaccess Site Access Control, but I cannot install them in my WordPress-hosted site. Why? Is there a way of doing that, apart from forcing all members to create WordPress accounts?
